Working for Amazon Part Time
We can't work for a competitor yet RM are happy to deliver parcels on behalf of the competitors we're not allowed to work for, seems a bit like double standards to me.

Ignorance is bliss
Go for it,if RM is not willing to give you extra hours to support your family then just play ignorance.
Who knows you may prefer working at amazon and get full time hours there.

Just phone HR and ask them if you are allowed to do it. The phone number should be on your payslip.

You seem to have convinced yourself. Ring HR as per Sugars post and get it in writing. Without getting it writing you're potentially leavingAshley1983 wrote:I disagree, wiki both companies. yourself wide open. What happens if you get seen by management/colleagues on the streets delivering for Amazon,
word will get back - how many times do you turn up to the door/same street at the same time as an Amazon driver? - every day in
my experience.
If you get binned by local RM management are you willing to cover the time and expense of taking
corporate RM to an industrial tribunal to argue whether Amazon are a competitor or not?
Accident on delivery for Amazon and you're off work - what happens to sick pay? Cost of business/courier insurance
for your own vehicle? Get caught in traffic or a queue at the Amazon depot and are late for your afternoon shift?

Amazon are a retailer true but also a delivery company the clue is in the Amazon delivery driver in the Amazon van delivering items. Amazon are an absolute behemoth. They are undoubtedly a competitor. The days of Amazon being just a retailer are long gone.
If you haven't noticed that Amazon have heavily moved into the logistics industry over the last 5-10 years, you haven't been paying attention.
They are a huge threat to all logistics, fulfilment and delivery companies. Especially, considering how little tax they pay, and how they can decimate and exploit the labour markets.

Just so you are aware, there’s a girl at my office who’s currently been taking down the conduct code and told she may lose her job. She’s been working for Amazon on a late afternoon. Management really aren’t impressed. It’s not hearsay either, she showed me the letter she’s received which talks about RM claiming back money from her (not sure exactly what that is about or if it’s scare tactics).
I feel for you, 27.5 really isn’t much but it’s better than 0. If you can get a lot more hours at Amazon then I’d leave RM and go for it. But don’t leave RM unless you definitely get an Amazon job.

Many thanks for your comment. that does make sense and is true. Just hard when you are forced into 1pm starts as its harder to get another part time position around it as its right in the middle of the day. Seems only 4 staff out of an office with over 70 are pushed into this shift. Makes sense what you say. Just rough as when you show willing, always complete and have a clean record you end up behind. They are happy for you to struggle by on 27.5 hours a week yet will screw you if you work in a hub for Amazon. On heavy days, having to do the last two loops in the dark seems wrong. At the beginning of the year you get told you're not to deliver in the dark, and yet now you are told to get on with it and use a torch. Health and safety put aside for a completed route. Goal posts moved constantly in this company. Looking elsewhere now to replace this job. Thought this would be a decent job, seems not to be the case. Again many thanks for your input.yellowbelly wrote:You seem to have convinced yourself. Ring HR as per Sugars post and get it in writing. Dhl, Ups, Dpd, Fedex and Yodel deliver goods the same as RM. They are straight up competitors no doubt. I wouldn't expect to go for employment there and not get grief. Can you go on their websites and buy a phone a tv or a lawnmower? No! Why because they are a delivery service not a retailer. RM deliver on occasion Amazon goods not the other way round. Amazon primarily deliver items they sell. Just like Argos. If I'm so dense why bother wasting your time commenting. Im fairly sure you're no professor. Thanks for your useless input.

Many thanks for your reply. Very true what you say. My plan was to try to gain employment within the warehouse on sortation or packing etc. Would be nice to be indoors for some of my working week. I understand technicalities are what they are though. Thanks again.yellowbelly wrote:You seem to have convinced yourself. Ring HR as per Sugars post and get it in writing. Amazon created a company called Amazon Logistics UK LTD a good number of years ago, this is when they started to roll out their own capacity to deliver, this was later incorporated into Amazon UK Services LTD. Amazon have been a logistics and delivery company for many years now. They are a direct competitor, as has already been mentioned they recently won a Covid Testing kit delivery contract, in direct competition with Royal Mail.Ashley1983 wrote: Dhl, Ups, Dpd, Fedex and Yodel deliver goods the same as RM. So no they are not just a retailer that delivers their own stuff.
Amazon serves also as a e-commerce market place, they are a web services provider, a broadcaster, they're investing heavily in AI, robotics and drone/automated delivery services, they are literally building airports in the US to rollout an ever increasing capacity to deliver stuff. They've bought out multiple "home security" companies, including Ring, they've even produced "smart door locks" that allow their own couriers access to properties that have them installed. They're investing in Facial recognition and automated "neighbourhood watch systems". They own Twitch, they're a book publisher, they have a film and TV studio, they make their own consumer electronics, they also bought out whole foods, so they're moving into the supermarket/grocer industry.
Just a retailer.... pfft.

And to think it all started as an online book retailer in Jeff Bezos's garage on Northeast 28th Street in Bellevue, Washington back in 1994.Murdoch wrote:Just a retailer.... pfft.
Oh, simpler times back then.
