Thousands of Christmas letters lay undelivered in a Royal Mail depot for a year, it has emerged.
About 4,000 items were found in an area of the Aberdeen Mail Centre that has not been used since last Christmas, following a relocation of equipment.

A Royal Mail spokesperson said: "We would like to offer our sincere apologies to our customers."

The mail will now be delivered. Customers with concerns about missing mail can call 08457 740 740.

The spokesperson said: "This appears to have been an unfortunate human error and no individual has been identified as being responsible.

"However, strong measures have been put in place to ensure this does not happen again.

"The safety and security of mail is of paramount importance to this business and Royal Mail takes every step to ensure that mail reaches customers correctly. Incidents such as this are a rare occurrence."

That translates as "we know precisely which person or persons are responsible, but as they are screws, we can't sack them for Wilful Delay - but it sure won't happen here again....we've transferred them out to other MCs

Stuart, my sympathies to you for a blatant load of fecking bollox - but it is the same old same old....if you work for a living you get shafted, if you do the square root of feck all you get protected

Yes. They're very good at masking the piss-poor performances of executives and managers. On second thoughts, are they though?
They haven't fooled me, or the majority of my colleagues, and there are signs that the general public might, just might, be waking up to the stunning levels of incompetence, greed, and avarice, displayed by the many turnips mis-managing their, our, public service.

So, put me down as a don't know, but can hazard a good guess. Cheers.

What fun I had delivering some of them today, they found them on Monday but waited until Saturday to put them out. Wonderfull.

A ROYAL Mail blunder left thousands of last year's Christmas cards and letters abandoned in a basement.

Staff discovered two bags of first-class post under empty mail bags earlier this week when they opened a storage area not used since last year.

The post finally started dropping through letter boxes yesterday.

The haul of 4500 cards and letters was unearthed at the Aberdeen Mail Centre, who process the north-east's post and deal with about 28million items of mail over the festive period.

Lorraine Farquhar, from Aberdeen, yesterday said she had wondered why some family cards had not arrived last year.

She said: "It's a joke. We trust the Royal Mail with our post and they laugh in our faces in return."

Royal Mail bosses have launched an investigation. A spokeswoman said: "Royal Mail can confirm that a number of items were found, following a relocation of equipment, in an area of the mail centre that has not been used since last Christmas.

"We would like to offer our sincere apologies to customers for any inconvenience.

"This appears to have been an unfortunate human error and no individual has been identified as being responsible.

"However, strong measures have been put in place to ensure this does not happen again."

Tricia Dow, director of Postwatch Scotland, said: "This is extremely disappointing for customers.

"It is a major blip in Royal Mail's service, particularly at such an important time."

She advised customers to keep their envelopes if they wanted to make a claim against Royal Mail.

A REPORT IN MY LOCAL NEWSPAPER TODAY SAYS POSTAL BOSSES DISCOVERED 4000 LETTERS IN A STORAGE
AREA WHICH HAS NOT BEEN USED SINCE LAST XMAS IN THE MAIL CENTRE IN ABERDEEN.
SEEMINGLY 2 BAGS OF FIRST CLASS MAIL WERE FOUND BENEATH OTHER EMPTY MAIL BAGS IN A CARRIER CAGE.
IT STATES WORKERS HAVE SPENT THE LAST 5 DAYS PROCESSING THE MAIL AND IT WILL DELIVERED FROM TODAY
ALONG WITH LETTERS OF APOLOGY

5 DAYS TO SORT THROUGH 4000 LETTERS,CHRIST THATS QUICK !!!!!!
