IF you really want to do it.............................
There are usually two levels of business insurance - the basic will cover you travelling to different workplaces within the day. That is sufficient to drive to a start point and leave the car, then drive back at the end. Whether you could use it to get between loops isn't certain, but you must not carry any mail in the car. The higher level of insurance would be needed to carry mail as it would be classed as "commercial travelling" - because the mail itself would have to be insured.
The lower level can be added at a fairly low cost, some insurers include it as standard anyway. RM will cover you for third party but that really isn't worth having - you would have no cover for your own vehicle. If someone thinks you have mail in your car and break into it, any claim will be off of your own insurance. And even if RM cover things on their insurance, you would still have to inform your own company of all incidents (that is a requirement within all personal car insurance policies).
My previous job involved processing travel claims for people and although not exactly the same, the basic facts are similar enough.

Royal Mail
failing the workforce, failing the public and deliberately failing mail on a daily basis for too many years.

Be careful with that. I watched an episode of 'Police Interceptors' on Channel 5 last week where police stopped a postman in Essex using his own car. They found he had no insurance, got him to remove bags of mail onto roadside, arranged to have his car towed away for impounding, and reported him for possible prosecution.endofdays1982 wrote:Back to this topic?

And posties are willing to risk that because RM won't hire extra vans !baldrick wrote:Be careful with that. Let's just remember it's not down to us to provide the basic tools for the job.

I wouldn't be surprised if RM are keeping an eye on things like hours used, etc where people are using their cars to evaluate the potential for owner/drivers

We have people in our office do it who shadow the van but I think the best policy for every post person is to just not take your car out full stop.

Wonderful idea but like ive said, here in the midlands weve been given the option of shadowing a van in your car, waiting until a van comes back at 1;30/2pm and going out on delivery then or finding another job. Which is the best option?delboy1969 wrote:We have people in our office do it who shadow the van but I think the best policy for every post person is to just not take your car out full stop.

this argument seems to go on and on without any real solutions people should be allowed to do what they feel comfortable doing whether that be using thier own car or not do people really want to see the company go down the pan i dont see anybody coming up with any better options under the current circumstances ,possibly royal mail are pulling a fast one with cars on delivery but we wont know till this blows over whenever that is but in the mean time you do what feels right for you
