It's daft because if you were to be made up to full-time your DOM can only put you on a 35 hour contract knowing the duty is 39 hours.
I'm on a contract of 36.5 and book 1.5 every week.The 36.5 is still considered 'part-time'.

I presume because we accepted a lower offer on the assumption the working week was also going to be shortened.
How can there be a shortened working week when our duties are still designed to a 40 hour week? In fact, it’s been so long since there have been any revisions to duties that online shopping has gone through the roof and many new houses have been built, and it would take well in excess of 40 hours to deliver the letters and parcels during a ‘normal’ time, never-mind the Christmas levels of parcels we’re having to deliver since lockdown; yet the union wants a 35 hour week??!! So after 35 hours our pay goes down (yes, in what other company does your hourly rate actually go down when you reach overtime?!) - we’ll be doing the same amount of work and more for less pay! In order to successfully implement a shorter working week (whereby your duty actually would take 35 hours to sort and deliver over 5 days - it should only be during exceptional circumstances when overtime is required) RM need to recruit yet all they talk about is the constant rhetoric of losing money and the necessity of redundancies!!!
Sorry but this is utter nonsense.

The shorter working week is or rather was being implemented to take into consideration increased automation meaning less indoor work would be required.
Totally agree complete nonsense post , I never understand posties moaning about the SWW by saying they won’t have time to complete their duty .Thats royal mails problem to fix , not yours .

I regularly want to bash my head against the frame when the subject of the SWW comes up some mornings, like has been said above a good chunk up here say they are not bothered about it. They will be the first ones to kick off when indoor time gets made shorter and delivery longer. There are so many in RM who can’t see the bigger picture of why it was fought for. Besides that it was an agreed deal, if you work it out over a year each hour is just under a week and a half’s time off, why would u not be bothered about that?

It's a bit like moaning about lapsing. If you have time, do it. If not and you don't want overtime, you don't have to. Is it people moaning about doing it rather than buggering off home a half hr early (and getting paid for doing no work)?

Could not agree more. Sometimes I feel like I’m living in some parallel universe or something. Now,whenever any of the “come in early” crew start their daily rant regarding lapsing I resist the urge to say anything & walk away. They simply cannot join the dots for some reason
“Shorts,in this weather?!”

“If they’re bills I don’t want ‘em!”

“What’s she been ordering now?”

With the shares taking another 5% drop today perhaps we are more likely to be reading a RNS than a joint statement?

If they do issue an RNS or profits warning I'm more convinced than ever that this particular share is subject to manipulation and possibly even insider trading.... a profit warning coming straight after a rather inexplicable 30% spike in the share price only a week ago would be too much of a coincidence.

The union promoting it as a done deal raised false expectations.
It is apparent Royal Mail were briefing managers that it was a done deal also, as the following extract indicates;

Your (managers) briefing pack Group Communications · February/March 2018

2. PAY AND SHORTER WORKING WEEK***
From October 2019, a further one-hour reduction to the working week, subject to a joint evaluation of factors including ongoing efficiency, implementation of changes from trials in the operation and technological changes.
A commitment to move towards a 35-hour week by 2022.
From October 2018, new full-time colleagues will be recruited on a 35-hour week.

5. PART-TIME COLLEAGUES
An increase in hourly rate of pay in October 2018 and 2019 to reflect the shorter working week of full-time colleagues. This is in addition to the pay award for all eligible colleagues.
We will honour our agreements regarding part-time colleagues:

It still has to be a ballot as to whether we accept it or not, or would you rather have RM able to do what the hell they want? :cuppa
