Plenty of spaces for vans at our office - or at least there would be if the self-entitled brigade were told they couldn't park there (and not whinge about being blocked in). And the cwu rep didn't try to show all the newbies wow wonderful he is by telling all the newbies they can anywhere they like! Sadly all of the would involve having decent management, so it will never happen.

where do they park them?
Overnight retention.
that still leaves a hell of a lot of people (well over 50% of staff) that are not contractually obliged to drive for RM.
Most of those already drive for Royal Mail, if they were to inexplicably withdraw themselves from driving without a medical reason they may not end up dismissed (although there is an argument for custom and practice) but the business is only obliged to redeploy you in your parent office where possible, you could end up relocated 30 miles away and since it's your choice, no excess travel expenses.

How many would go down that route?
Fair enough with the overnight retentions, but where do they get parked when you bring them into an already crowded Delivery Office. Many DO's are manic at dispatch time with the lack of parking as it is.

With regards to people not wanting to drive anymore for RM, it's been happening for years that people have had a bad experience (sometimes their fault, sometimes an honest mistake) and asked to be removed from driving duties. Also those that get caught speeding/have a bump etc and are removed by management. I've never seen that cause a person to be dismissed (for that single event) or be moved office, unless extremely serious.
I know for a fact theres several long time driving staff in our office that when there is a next re pick of duties they will be looking for a passenger (or equivalent role they create due to no van share) duty, as they are unwilling to do it anymore.

At the moment we're talking about a relatively small amount of people choosing or being required to stop driving.

We're also taking about a situation where there are existing roles within the park&loop system where non drivers can exist.

If a reasonably large proportion of drivers choose to stop driving and simultaneously park&loop is withdrawn then forced relocation is inevitable.

Again who is going to choose enforced relocation over driving?

Xmas will be interesting if van sharing isn't back.

I'm quite looking forward to it.

Though the fact we have many posties that don't drive - it's going to be messy.

I suppose it will come down to individual offices and how they have been managed through this crisis. It's human nature for people to want to make their life easier, and even try to make it less stressful. The figures are stark for our office - 100% of the people in the past 5 years that have been dismissed or given suspended dismissal have been performing driving duties when the offence happened. I'll bow to your greater knowledge when you say you may cause yourself to get moved, but some guys and girls I know have had it.
