2 IN A VAN AGAIN?
Those in our office who can drive but won't do it for RM are slowly realising that they might be faced with a tough choice soon. Enjoyed it at the start (who wouldn't) and they maybe thought it would be a few weeks at the most. They want shared vans to return as they are fed up getting buses etc, or using their cars, but why won't they agree to drive and do an afternoon shift

The more you drive the greater the chance of an accident be it your fault or another person, why put yourself and your license at risk if you don't have to?Cucumber wrote:Those in our office who can drive but won't do it for RM are slowly realising that they might be faced with a tough choice soon. Some people enjoy driving and to others it's a necessary evil, many in our office took the RM test to pick up more overtime but regret it when they are pulled off their own walks to cover drives.
Until there's a higher pay rate or it is required to stay in the job i don't blame anyone who doesn't volunteer to drive for RM.

If afternoon deliveries are introduced those with " Van Retention " are not going to be very happy if the van has to be left at work to be reused in the afternoonSpacePhoenix wrote:If it ends up with there only being afternoon shift duties left then you'll have no choice. Full times will almost certainly be the ones doing the IPS and preparing the walks. They physically won't be able to take out literally everything for all walks so there'll be afternoon shifts. If RM decide that having split shifts is more economical than van share then chances are van share will be gone for goodGasman11 wrote:Woah, woah, woah, you can knock that part timers doing the afternoon shift on the head nonsense. I specifically took this job on a part time basis for child care reasons and there's no chance i'll be agreeing to work past school pick up times, they can pee right off.2yearpostie wrote:THIS is the future of rm shift work, morning ft people doing 8 or 9 loops of letters (walk and half) part time people delivering parcels for 2 walks so its safe to work later in winter.Intercityfirm1970 wrote:All this hysteria over not going back to two in a van is bollocks I've been working in an office for three months that's had half arsed social distancing I now as a non driver have to do 8 loops with my partner to compensate for him doing oversized but all the extra dead walking to next loops etc is writing me off I've done this for 35 years and this last three months has nearly finished me off physically and Saturday I saw 5 different learner drivers pass me with no masks and no screens so what's the difference.. Viva la two in a van ASAP

Is it just me that gets the feeling that sooner rather than later you will need to drive in this job though?A2B wrote:The more you drive the greater the chance of an accident be it your fault or another person, why put yourself and your license at risk if you don't have to?Cucumber wrote:Those in our office who can drive but won't do it for RM are slowly realising that they might be faced with a tough choice soon. Can't think of any way RM could make anyone who joined the company before the requirement to drive was introduced drive a RM vehicle.

Pay drivers more money and then maybe the non-drivers will be motivated to learn to drive.A2B wrote:Can't think of any way RM could make anyone who joined the company before the requirement to drive was introduced drive a RM vehicle.

There seems to be a resentment of non drivers from some, but the fact is that either you joined RM after the point you needed a license in which case you knew what you were signing up to or you joined before it was a requirement and willingly chose to drive for RM so you have no one to be angry at but yourself if you have any bitterness or regrets. No one forced you to drive.
If you tolerate this, then your paid break will be next

No idea what you are talking about.Acca Dacca wrote:There seems to be a resentment of non drivers from some, but the fact is that either you joined RM after the point you needed a license in which case you knew what you were signing up to or you joined before it was a requirement and willingly chose to drive for RM so you have no one to be angry at but yourself if you have any bitterness or regrets. Nothing to do with resentment of non drivers....
it's just logical that drivers should be paid more with the significant risk they are taking. How many accidents, rollaways, crashes..... tickets for parking, speeding, etc.... happen each year? how many Posties are dismissed each year for a driving incident?
by what you are saying it's clear you would have resentment if drivers were paid more.
Whether I was the passenger or driver I would expect the driver to be paid more.
I'd personally rather be the passenger even if the driver was paid £1 or £2 more per hour.

I noticed from another of your posts that you have only been with RM a couple of years so you took the job knowing you would be driving and the rate of pay? Maybe you should have considered the risk to reward ratio before you took the job if you don't think it's fair?norris9 wrote:No idea what you are talking about.Acca Dacca wrote:There seems to be a resentment of non drivers from some, but the fact is that either you joined RM after the point you needed a license in which case you knew what you were signing up to or you joined before it was a requirement and willingly chose to drive for RM so you have no one to be angry at but yourself if you have any bitterness or regrets. Some people are now being informed they are going on the later afternoon/early evening delivery shift with only the minimum of notice required. I can see it polarising staff even more if they select some and not others to cover these 'unpalatable' hours of work. It needs to be done on a rota basis to allow for equality and fairness.

I had to really to push to get off the 12 30 starts. It ruined my mental health. Couldnt see friends., had hours to wait for work. Couldn’t see friends we were on lockdown and couldn’t see friends so that’s a poor excuse. How are you finishing so late as well.Personally don’t get why people would prefer to go back to van shareJamiechelt wrote:I had to really to push to get off the 12 30 starts.
