Van sharing when 1 metre?
I wouldn't be surprised if RM were looking at the hours used all around the country and will decide eventually if they're going to keep split shifts

Van sharing when 1 metre?
Trouble is two walk duties shared (i.e. 12+ (40 min) loops and packets/parcels) cannot be cleared in one day without van sharing. So when the current temporary relaxation to the Royal Mail Universal Service Obligation comes to and end....what then?

One problem is that we're judging things on the current level of parcels.1560loopsayear wrote:Trouble is two walk duties shared (i.e. 12+ (40 min) loops and packets/parcels) cannot be cleared in one day without van sharing. If you're going to do that then to be fair it's doubtful that van sharing would have cleared the two duties anyway.
The parcel volumes are similar to Christmas and we don't clear then.
If you were dealing with normal volumes and the situation was managed better (for instance giving the non driver an extra loop to allow large parcel delivery) it could work.
What we also have to understand is that the plan is to remove large parcels and Tracked from letter deliveries.

Van sharing when 1 metre?
Given the drop in letters and increase in parcels/packets we tried to go down the route of giving the non driver 1-2 extra loops of mail only, plus packets that would post through doors (i.e. taking no longer than a letter). It was flatly refused by the non drivers as they wanted to keep things nice and hassle free, management simply not interested in changing duty structures to enable it. There must be literally hundreds of planning staff doing very little for RM just now (I can't imagine revisions etc are going ahead through this), so I can't understand why they haven't been repurposed to come up with some emergency planning.Woody Guthrie wrote:One problem is that we're judging things on the current level of parcels.1560loopsayear wrote:Trouble is two walk duties shared (i.e. 12+ (40 min) loops and packets/parcels) cannot be cleared in one day without van sharing. I won't be surprised if RM decide to keep the split shifts permanently, they must be getting better utilisation of all the vans, just 1 maybe 2 of the vans would need to be dedicated to delivering SDs. Depending on the number of vans, maybe they could even have the LAT stuff delivered with each DO sending a van to collect the LAT stuff from the local hub

Van sharing when 1 metre?
If they are going to keep split shifts I feel sorry for the mugs that volunteered to do it, they've all had enough now. When they started the early people where encouraged to get done early to get the vans back, now that's stopped and people are told not to come back early or they'll be sent back out. The result, the late starters are waiting upto 2 hours for vans to get back! And they and the managers know people are hanging it out upto their finish times. Think most will be returning to normal start times soon. If split shifts are here to stay they need to do a revision and have a repick. I'm guessing all late starts will be part time duties because you need the full timers in early to do the indoor work

Some of them late starts could be hybrid duties, doing collections with collections from large/bulk customers and larger PO branches still being done by the local MC. Potentially some could do LAT items.citypostie wrote:If they are going to keep split shifts I feel sorry for the mugs that volunteered to do it, they've all had enough now. I wish we could get a breakdown of the average number of LAT items per DO (if the each DO had delivered its own LAT items)

If enough people are unhappy with the way things are just now, they simply need to turn up for work at their original start time and ask what they are to do.citypostie wrote:If they are going to keep split shifts I feel sorry for the mugs that volunteered to do it, they've all had enough now. People won't though, as there is far too much short sighted deals/gains being made from the current situation.

Van sharing when 1 metre?
We have been told we can go back to van sharing when the 1 meter kicks in but only if we want to, they have said as long as we both wear gloves and a mask all should be ok, after all it’s not like we are in the van all day together and as driving instructors are going to be doing this then I suppose we could also but only off course if this was something both parties agreed to - I mean at the moment walks are sitting with a weeks plus mail at least and with 2 in a van we would certainly clear much more than what’s currently been done at the moment. And I know many of you’s will agree with me when I say everyone seems to have become so much lazier recently due to managers not managing and not giving a toss what’s going out and what’s getting left!

Van sharing has been banned on a national level. Until an announcement is made that retracts that ban on a national level then NOBODY should be van sharing, nor should any manager be permitting this practice.

You know that when talking about split shifts at the moment everyone means the current arrangement they've brought in with people starting later to aid social distancingDindin wrote:Do you know what a split shift is?citypostie wrote:If they are going to keep split shifts I feel sorry for the mugs that volunteered to do it, they've all had enough now.
