For me it would be pay number. There's one guy left here who started the same day as me. The fact he has a lower pay number than me says his paperwork was done before mine and therefore he has been on Royal Mails books longer than me.

As Mr.Hill posted, it's pretty clearly worded how it should be sorted in The Way Forward Agreement;Vwtouran wrote:Both of us have applied for the same vacant duty, we both started on the same day & contract on same day!
Nobody knows the procedure, obviously doesn’t go by age anymore. Someone said to me it’s when whoever had the letter of acceptance but that was 20 years ago!
Anyone know how to sort it?
"Where several employees have the same length of service (as defined above), the agreement provides for seniority to be determined in the following order: firstly, any periods of Post Office service on other grades (i.e. longest total PO service first), secondly, date of selection (i.e. earliest date first) and thirdly, date of birth (i.e. oldest first). For employees recruited since the date of the agreement (14 February 2000), “date of selection” will be defined as follows: firstly date of the letter offering employment (earliest first), if still equal then date of interview (earliest first), if still equal then date of test (earliest first). If then still equal then the third “date of birth” criterion is considered as above.
For employees recruited before 14 February 2000, it will not be practicable to re-visit records of recruitment processes that took place in some cases many years previously. Therefore, purely as a one-off exercise used only to separate employees with exactly the same length of service, the date of selection and date of birth criteria above will be replaced with: firstly, existing substantive grade (highest first), if still equal then position on existing locally agreed seniority list (highest first). In applying this last criteria the local seniority list must be one that conforms with the previous national agreement, and in particular one where the provisions of the part-time harmonisation agreement have been fully applied. Where employees are added into an existing list (e.g. following transfer) where there are already other employees who started on the same day, every effort should be made to apply the date of selection criterion to determine a placing. Where this is not possible then date of birth should be used."
Date of Birth is used as a last resort if you both are inseparable in all the other criteria & you both insist you want the duty.

The world has moved on.
What was acceptable then may not be acceptable now.
Using date of birth is no longer acceptable.

Official Royal Mail policy.
Commencing employment on the same day
Where several employees have the same length of service, as defined above, the order of seniority will be determined as follows.
For employees recruited before 14 February 2000 the order was:
• any periods of Royal Mail Group service on other grades, i.e. longest total Royal Mail Group service first,
• existing substantive grade, highest first
• If still equal then - position on previous locally agreed seniority list at 14 February 2000, highest first
In the CWU Way Forward Agreement the order was:
• Date of selection
• Date of birth
Following the Age Regulations in October 2006, the sequence will be:any periods of Royal Mail Group service on other grades, i.e. longest total Royal Mail Group service first,
• Date of written confirmation offering employment, earliest first
• If still equal then - date of interview, earliest first
• If still equal then - date of test, earliest first

Times like this you should have a sorting race. OPL fitting at the nearest mail centre. Twenty minutes and a thousand letters.
You could also have a hand stamping race, bag tipping contest, bag tying contest.
Could call it the OPLympics.

Gaz, spot on mate. That's exactly the way it is. The one with the lower number is senior. It's crap as I know from the navy that my number was higher than a few who signed up a few weeks after me but I was sitting at the back of the training theatre and they were promoted before me. Also the army had much the same way of working. Not many people been in both RN and RAOC later RLC. Still proud.

I know it sounds all nice and like we live in a perfect world but.....
Wouldn’t a job share be the fairest way forward here. Weeks 1, 3, 5, 7 etc you have the round, weeks 2, 4, 6, 8 etc you’re on cover duties. The other guy does the round weeks 2, 4, 6, 8. When he’s on holibobs you do the round, vice versa.

The day is gonna come when we’re all gonna have to testify.

Been through this myself in September last year,it took forever to resolve, the definitive answer was the person who was interviewed the first was the most senior, luckily for myself that was me and I was made full time after 14 years of waiting.
