Cars on delivery

We are in a situation where as an SPDO closed down and the sorting has gone to the nearest town. We now have to travel in our own vehicles out to the village concerned and it really pisses me off because my wife takes me to work sometimes if she needs the car for the day then picks me up OR if weathers nice I go on 2 wheels to work (coupled up to a fair sized engine of course ). So I'm in a situation where its awkward for me not to take the car to work. The mail is dropped out to the village by van as the insurance won't cover me to carry mail, but I have problems when it comes to bringing mail back...
I've asked my manager for a van but they have said no chance as the budget won't allow one, but in my opinion if the job canot be done effectively without one, whats the issue...Its a right cock up I tell ya

Can you not pouch off or if's to big get your driver to take it back.

Pouching off is when you put your returned mail, signing cards, keys etc. into a PO (in the blue pouch bag), ask your DUM and union rep about it.

There is no PO now in the village..Only a Postbox.. Been a postie 15 years and at 3 different delivery offices and never had to pouch off!!.. Learn something new everyday eh!!

its funny reading this forum and you see the differences across offices.
my office is a big city office and its all pouching off with no one required to return to the office.
given the later start times the office is closed by the official finish times

That is exactly my point ... I despise and loathe being forced to use my own personal vehicle that I have worked hard for, to do Royal Mails work in. I have checked my insurance and it states as long as i'm NOT carrying mail I am insured..
I would love to say no I WON'T use my own car to get to my delivery point but it will only kick up loads of s**t..But I have made it blatently clear i am not happy using it and at times I wont be able to when my wife needs the car.

if you use your car to get your dilivery you are not insurred to drive your car!!!! if somebody runs into the back of you or you hit somthing they will not pay up. I dont have to tell you it is aganst the law to drive without insurranc. RM can not make you use your car. rember if you have a crash you are on your own.

The main reason why i haven't got a car is this, i don't see why i should pay petrol to use for work, to earn the money for the petrol so i can use for work. Its like paying to thirty pounds a week or more just to work, I pay enough out for that privildige. Plus Royal mail should (if i am right) give us the correct tools to do the job in. Ie pouch drops, and transport.

The max that they can get back is 8.8p/mile and they will need to have this documented.

If you want to be a salesman or carry mail then the loading is at least 100%

Couple of points on that, i should have made it clear, this is a tax relief of 40p per mile, you dont get it reduced to 8.8p/mile because your tax band is 22% you get the full rate,

re the documentation your right you do need to keep an accurate log of mileage however you do not send this in with the p87 form only if hmrc has reason to question your claim, hmrc have not asked to see mine(yet)

re the insurance, if anyone is carrying mail and doesnt have business insurance they will probably be in trouble of they are stopped by the police cause most policies will state for domestic and pleasure use only, for domestic pleasure and commuting only (commuting only covers to the do), they should be telling their boss they cant use their personal vehicle cause it is not covered by insurance

Re the insurance loadings not sure where you get them from mate but my loading for business insurance was approx 10% last year (30 Quid extra) even if it was 100% my claim last year was for 10000+ miles and the cheque i got from the tax man more than paid for my insurance not just the loading
(this was from my previous job before becoming a postie, if my boss asked me to use my personal vehicle he would be told to take a running jump)

So if now you cannot have your own transport you will now be unempolyable or if your car gets nicked you will be done for willful delay for it is your responabillity to provide fleet transport to royalmail!.
