Social distancing and van shares

Interested to hear if anyone else's office is having issues adhering to social distancing.

I have been touch with our local branch about the almost nil social distancing going on in our office but have not had a reply about it yet. I know that the official line is that you should refuse to work, but in my opinion, this only works if lots of people do the same. One of the most laughable things in our office is that since social distancing measures came in, we were told various things that the office has to do to be covid safe. One was follow a one way system around the office which no one does at all, and the other was boxing off from the back of the IPS - but even this isn't possible anymore because there are so many packets coming in that the managers now put the yorks behind the IPS meaning everyone is boxing off the mail from the front of the IPS.

I've spoke to our union rep who doesn't seem to be interested and our health and safety rep who also doesn't seem to care.

Would it be fair to say that no one seems to give one when it comes to social distancing - I don't think it will be long before the company has us all back van sharing again (and the union will probably roll over to this too).

Had similar problem in our office and was told we can’t do it properly at our place!I got in touch with local rep who sent health and safety rep in and Dom had to sort it out properly,that lasted about a week and although I try my best it’s pretty much impossible, I was told it’s your responsibility not the Royal Mail! They really have done a bad job and feel they couldn’t care less about the staff

Seems most of the country has began to adopt this attitude. Its difficult though when the measures put in place to protect the staff are then not followed by the staff !

you just have to look on today's news at the protests in London to know that people don't give a toss about social distancing. there's thousands standing right next to each other. its like the Cheltenham festival all over again. i can see a second wave coming.

Second wave? We're not even past the first yet! And yes, distancing is non-existent in our office, with managers being the worst offenders.

There was a token effort for a week or two, but people quickly gave up. Lots aren't even cleaning van interiors, or using sanitiser regularly.

Saw one new lad on delivery with a bundle of mail in one hand and an open bag of crisps in the other, eating between calls.

Same in our office. The guys mostly are still focused on getting finished as early as possible rather than some starting later for distancing. The management have put in place gloves, masks, hand sanitiser, one way system, but if they don't actually enforce any of this the herd (immunity) mentality is not to give a flying one. I have seen a different side of my work mates in this crisis. Thickasshititis is the new strain of Covid 19, and all because managers don't enforce what they have put in place. Cost again of heavy use of PPE?

Whether you sign up to the app or not, when it is launched call handlers from the newly launched telephone service may call, text or email you to give you clear instructions. This may include self-isolating because you have had close contact with someone with confirmed coronavirus.

Close contact means:

Face-to-face contact less than one metre away
Spending more than 15 minutes within two metres of someone
Being in a car/small vehicle – even on short journeys or on a plane.

To support the management of absences we would expect colleagues who have been instructed to self-isolate to provide evidence to their manager that they have been contacted and told to self-isolate. The evidence may be an email, text or letter.

As part of the Test and Trace process, colleagues may be asked to order a coronavirus test kit.

Examples of preventative measures to minimise infection:

Two-metre social distancing and hand hygiene should be followed at all times

Floor signage and posters

Having only one person in a van at any one time

Changing our signing process to avoid the need for the customer to sign for items

Retreating two metres from a customer’s door when delivering a parcel.

It could get interesting if half an office ends up in self-isolation because the office isn't following social distancing measures.
