BA laying off then rehiring
Could the situation with British Airways laying off thousands of staff then rehiring on different pay, terms and conditions happen here at Royal Mail. Especially now coronovirus is denting the profits?

They’re exploiting the lack of a travel industry whereas we are snowed under and working at full tilt, so no, I don’t think such a scenario is likely within Royal Mail anytime soon.

Will Covid-19 result in workers getting worse pay and conditions than they had before. Yes. Of course.Stella102 wrote:Could the situation with British Airways laying off thousands of staff then rehiring on different pay, terms and conditions happen here at Royal Mail. If you've bought into the idea that "we're all in this together". You've been lied to. The people who own the capital, will protect their capital, it won't be shared around to make sure the workers are ok.
Of course, BA can do this currently, because what are the staff going to do, go on strike? All their planes are grounded.

The BA staff are probably caught between a rock and a hard place because the alternative is probably for BA to go under (would the parent company just pull the plug on BA)?
When it comes to jobs it's most definitely going to be an "employer's market" as once the furlough scheme ends I wouldn't be surprised to see many people in many industries lose their jobs

British Airways are reported to be sitting on £8 billion in reserves and in the process of buying another airline and new aircraft, they have taken £300 million from the government so far.SpacePhoenix wrote:The BA staff are probably caught between a rock and a hard place because the alternative is probably for BA to go under (would the parent company just pull the plug on BA)?

This stance with their employees is immoral

Is that actually BA that's supposedly sitting on the reserves and buying new planes or is it actually the parent company?A2B wrote:British Airways are reported to be sitting on £8 billion in reserves and in the process of buying another airline and new aircraft,

No. British Airways aren't doing any business because there really aren't any planes going anywhere. In contrast, Royal Mail have been doing business throughout this pandemic and whilst letters are often down this time of year, people have bought much more stuff online because many physical retailers have shut.
I don't think its exactly legal to make staff redundant and then recruit someone on different pay, terms and conditions because you are in effect saying that the job doesn't exist anymore. I could be wrong though.
Don't forget that many of us are in a Union and before this pandemic we had a ballot to strike. This sort of thing prevents employers from making big changes without proper negotiations
On the face of it, shareholder value is the dumbest idea in the world.

A girl I know works for them and says BA made sure they furloughed union reps and crew that know their stuff to get them out the way and make it hard for staff to get access to them.

With some of the senior trolley dollies, oh sorry cabin crew, on well over £50k per year apparently, you can't really blame BA for trying!

I do apologise for my deeply offensive and derogatory insult, I will report myself forthwith to the Thought Police and await my imminent dispatch to the re-education camp.hero22 wrote:wacko74 wrote:With some of the senior trolley dollies, oh sorry cabin crew, on well over £50k per year apparently, you can't really blame BA for trying!
