It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

If RM had this surplus they would have paid the dividend instead of sending the share price tumbling and leaving themselves open to takeover. I also remember the £800 million figure being mentioned but i thought it said they had secured funding from banks but i may be wrong.
Most of our vans are used for 5hrs a day while on delivery and then parked up for the day, obviously some are used for collections and overtime but it's not a good use of resources.
I'm not arguing that staggered starts isn't a way through this, what i'm saying is it isn't an option open to management at the moment and it will be very hard for the CWU to sell it to the workforce even as a temporary measure.
Found it... £800 million in cash, £925 million to call upon in credit. Thats why they have suspended dividends for now

On the face of it, shareholder value is the dumbest idea in the world.

Even if your van seats were spaced well apart and we went back to shared vans.....you still need to stand at your frames together in the morning sorting the mail.Cucumber wrote:Still too close to van share?POSTMAN wrote:https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/ ... ct-2-metre

The difference between those still sharing a vehicle and those not are their employers and risk.daveyeff wrote:i still see people using taxi's...how does that work? don't know if coppers are still 2 in a car. and i think ambulance staff still share.
Typically Fire, Police, Ambulance, Council workers etc are all public service employees. They don't have shareholders, a profit and loss to worry about and ultimately if there is any blowback from this the government will pick up the cost.
At the other end of the scale you have small operators with half a dozen employees, often family members who balance the risk in terms of individual exposure against the risk to their business model of running at a loss.
Royal Mail is a different case, members of staff have already died and will continue to do so, in order to protect themselves against future liability they have to do everything practical to limit the exposure to the virus. All of the changes in Royal Mail are driven by risk assessment, not the health and safety risk but the legal liability risk.
The funny thing is if we were still publicly owned we may still have been van sharing but a private company with this number of employees can't risk it.
This could be the next black lung or asbestosis and you don't want your company to be front and centre during that.

Same law applies to anyone.
If you don't think your workplace is safe don't go.

You would need to ask them but I know that both Unite and Unison don't think so.daveyeff wrote:They must all feel safe sharing then.Woody Guthrie wrote:Did we have a say?daveyeff wrote:Do the employees not have a say then.?

If/when shared vans return does anyone think it will follow the expected guidelines that we will have for 'bubbles' etc?
For instance, you will be allowed close contact with a limited number of people - let's say 10 - would RM ask you to use 1-2 work colleagues as one/two of your 10?
