So is a later start on split shift voluntary or you have no choice?

Post by postiewhite »

Ive been off all week and ive heard our office is starting split shifts. My FT partner is likely to have normal hours and although I have not been told im on a late shift iam expecting my manager to either ask or tell me im on a later shift maybe til 5pm. Now there is no way I will volunteer for this shift pattern as I have a vulnerable family member that I need to run around for 2 or 3 afternoons a week and will seriously distrupt this. So I want a heads up before the question is asked of me when im back.

Won't RM just be able to force it to happen anyway due to social distancing?

Ive took advice and you cannot be forced to work later shifts or past your time. If you were put on a mid morning or lunch time start and dont want that then you do not have to do it. This is now in writing. Voluntary means just that.

At the same time we need to observe social distancing so if your office can only do that by staggering shift start times then we need to make that sacrifice. It's a national medical emergency after all.
