I Wrote-During Covid-Which is still relevant now
It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.
My BFF Clash
The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

You really think it's just leave letters and everything will be fine when you all get back hours before your time? They're making duty changes from the 11th of May; my guess that means taking extra, possibly parcels from both paired walks or from another duty if you're a singleton. That means 50% less staff.rambo1 wrote:It's not weekends off is it. It's just don't take a couple of hundred letters per delivery on Saturday. That's not Saturdays off.Seymour Buts wrote:Depends on your point of view, for those who have signed rest day sa contracts it's roughly a 20% pay cut overnight. With respect, they've done this 'coz they know the reaction of many will be like yours: great, weekends off. They've rammed this through without any consultation pretending it's about covid when it's really about pushing an agender to undermine letters which are the most labour intensive part of the business. This is a major step towards becoming Hermes, Yodel ect.Edward Hunter wrote:I would love Monday - Friday, or at least the chance to have more Saturdays off, i would also be sorely tempted by EVR as i know a lot of senior guys would. Looking at Letter volumes i can see where RM are coming from tbh. Managed correctly there may not be too much opposition to this.

We really need to calm the f**k down and see what's what before we start putting the fear of God into people.
It isn't helpful.
Its the world we live in now mate. Every time you turn the tv on, listen to the radio or read the paper, Every f****r in the land is trying to put the fear of god into you. In this case who knows. I am surprised how many on here think its a good thing though. Might be wise to stop thinking of having a nice weekend off and start thinking of the mates you will lose in the workplace or just the decent people trying to feed their families.

So just a few days ago the CWU was demanding we go to a 3 day week for the duration of the pandemic.
Now RM announce a move to a 5 day week and the sky is falling in?

The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

As did the whole 4th emergency debacle.
Even Matt Hancock has handled the Coronavirus pandemic better than Terry.

Good point, forgot about that. Only thing is when Royal Mail suggest it, you know there is an ulterior motive.clashcityrocker wrote:So just a few days ago the CWU was demanding we go to a 3 day week for the duration of the pandemic.

Confused when the video says "we've been in dialogue with our regulator Ofcom" & then says "we've informed them of this temporary change".
It implies the regulator was told of the change & Ofcom agreed to the temporary change. I thought Ofcom were responsible for reviewing the USO but the video then says "that we're are going to keep the temporary change in Saturday postal arrangements under review".
Does we include Ofcom?

I agree with you. With two strikes bungled in as many years he should've resigned, in truth.Woody Guthrie wrote:It did play right into their hands.Seymour Buts wrote:Which was equally as stupid and would've played straight into their hands.clashcityrocker wrote:So just a few days ago the CWU was demanding we go to a 3 day week for the duration of the pandemic.

The unions focus has been on the shorter working week, when ALL effort should've been on opposing the seperation of tracked and oversized parcels from letters from the start. Now the hubs are virtually built from what I understand and they've managed to dump Saturday letter delivery.

What a mess we are in. I’m sure we’ll hear more details over the next few days.
Seen a few suggest day off covers and those who were last in are screwed. I’m not so sure - the sorting office I’m in has about 125 rounds. I know this isn’t representative of every DO but about 60% of duty holders here are people in their late 50s/early 60s. There’s a few younger full time duty holders (20%) but not many. Day off covers tend to be younger cos they don’t have enough seniority to get their own round and ‘last in’ PTers are all much younger still, usually in their 20s or 30, on 25 hour contracts with much more flexible contracts (mine requires me to work any hours between 7am and 7pm INCLUDING bank holidays if required!).
If the idea is to cut staff and I hope it isn’t, I doubt the priority will be young wet behind the ears posties who cost the business less wages, are generally faster outdoors, who are moved daily from pillar to post with little fuss all in order to keep uncle Brian on his 38 hour contract who’s done his round for 31 years, refuses to ever be moved and has a half hour argument every Tuesday with the line manager about lapsing. That’s not a criticism of the Brian’s of Royal Mail btw, they’ve earned it.
If cuts are made I can see a situation where the older ones nearing retirement are hassled to the point they give in and leave. Those who manage to put up with the harassment (a bit like those SAS courses) will then be offered redundancy. Leaving a younger majority PT flexible workforce with few loud voices. That’s where I think RM want to go with this, rather than ditching those who’ve only just joined.

You'd be out similar time, packets take longer to sort and specials still need booking and the locker will be the limiting factor to how quickly you get out.meercat wrote:Maybe one person could cover the tracked+recorded packets on 3 or 4 rounds if that is all they are delivering. In that case only 1 in 4 staff would need to attend on a Sat.rambo1 wrote:That's not Saturdays off.
If ALL packets are going then maybe 1 person could cover 2 or maybe 3 rounds so maybe less than half the office would be be needed to come in on a Sat.
With no letters involved you'd get out the door pretty quick with your packets - plus a big bloody list!

Royal mail have had plenty of time for all offices to social distance and now this. Sorry but too little to late for reducing a service which is more than needed at this time of crisis.
This is profit before people within this business now. Unfortunately it's not the time to strike but I would urge all union reps to stick together and put in a disagreement, all posties up and down the country are struggling to clear the office and this will only put another strain.
The business is hoping that everyone will clear on the Monday with little cost. I urge everyone to just work the hours your paid and go home, they dont deserve any extra help. We all know what royal mail's agenda is in the near future so watch this space and stick with your union.
