It sounds to me that the staff who are starting in the street are doing the right thing if they’re refusing to enter an environment that is manifestly unsafe. Personally, I’m still tying up at the office, but am starting later - the distancing is still, at times, inadequate, but there are few people around, so at this point I’ll carry on and back away as soon as anyone gets too close.

I don’t quite understand what you’re getting at. It’s implausible at best to think that a wide-ranging review is possible at this point in time, but what would be the point?

Some offices are dealing with this better than others but it's hardly surprising when the competence of management varies so greatly across the business.

We have nightshifts and staggered start times and the number in the office at any one time is minimal, we have people starting on the street where possible and afternoon deliveries.

It mostly works and rather than compromise on the safety we're quite prepared to fail the mail. Overtime is paid for extended delivery only because as pointed out it makes no sense having people starting on the street and then paying someone overtime to fill that hole It did take almost 3 days of talks between the rep and management to get to this point though.

Our DOM was considering telling Posties to come in later..... our Rep suggested, "Why don't you just tell them to come in WHEN they're meant to start"? .... He immediatetly gained an hours spacing ...... He asked "The Early Birds" to come in even earlier ... and gained another hours spacing (they Do Most of the IPS, Packets and porter it to the Duty Frames)..... Maybe a few ideas to mention to your DOM Mailman?

How does that work with the shared vans DP?

Staggered starts in our office too. Extended delivery being paid. Overtime scheduled for the duty, like late staff getting an hour before their normal start time, and their extended has been stopped. We have to cull and take it the following day. This is problematic. 4 rows and 5 days service, Monday to Friday. So some places get culled twice a week. Tracked items for the culled sections given to a driver, maybe the LAT man for them to cover. Wont be long before they have a real problem when the mail picks up. More of the walk will have to be culled making the following day even harder. Getting away with it at the moment due to very few firms on the collection runs being open. That may well change if they fear going bust. I can see half walks at Christmas at this rate, if it continues.

Try working in a mail centre with over 200 ppl for 12 hours, think I wouldn’t mind working delivery’s!!

How does that work with the shared vans DP?

We're Lucky in that we don't have a lot of Shared Van Duties (Mainly Singleton Rurals)..... In a BIG Office it's obviously going to be a problem. We Often Double Lapse and that Frees up Two Vans Straight Off that can be used by Van Share Partners that can Drive. Non-Drivers Still Prep their Duties and then make their way independently to the Duty Start Point, By Car, or Bicycle.

They're not using cars for Delivery, but there's been a bit of Re-Jigging of the Duties to allow re-supply of LWTs. Some Duties were already designed around a Van with HCT Partner getting a Re-Supply, so it's only the Shared Drive Out that's changed.
