Anyone deciding not to do any OT or days off during the pandemic?

Post by postiewhite »

I know everyone has different financial circumstances but for those that can live off their basic wage is any of you still going in early if asked or doing days out to help fellow collegues etc?.

For me I can scrape by on my 30 hrs and have been asked to go in early tomorrow as im predicting its going to be busy, however like most people I feel vunerable at work, more so when in the DO because of the lack of social distancing, so for me the longer I spend out on delivery and less inside the better.
Ive decided to speak to my manager tomorrow to tell him that from next week I will only be doing my hours because I feel unsafe. Health comes before extra cash if you can cope?
One or two have cancelled their Annual Leave because they don't want to be stuck at home and would rather work.
Personally that is not for me.
Whats your views?

I think everyone needs to make the decision that is right for them.

I am on 30 hours / 4 days and don't normally push for overtime as took the job as I wanted to work part-time but I have done the odd day off to help out lately due to the number of staff we have had off. We have been dealing with the issues reasonably well at our DO (PPE available and staggered start times mean I get in a bit later but the office is less populated so distancing is easier to manage although not 100% possible all the time). There are still risks indoors and outdoors though as some colleagues and customers do not take the situation seriously enough.

I totally agree though that if you feel uncomfortable with the situation you should only do your hours (or even self isolate). You are not obligated to do more than your contracted hours anyway.

No point risking your life for few extra quid just doing my contracted hours starting 2 hours late so no one left in the office and after finishing straight home I m sure we got plenty of opportunity in future to do overtime

I’m on a 25 hour contract so usually get 2 ish hours OT in the morning then an hour or 2 in the afternoon, plus usually work my day off. Because my health is priority I’m now just doing pretty much my hours, I don’t mind doing a bit extra (say 30mins) at the end but I come in around 11 to avoid everyone. That’s a loss of 20 hours a week.

It’s a challenge, my take home pay used to be around £400, now it’s £240 (I’m paying back a big tax bill). My wife has lost her job so I’m paying her bills and all in all I’m about £800-£900 a month worse off. I reckon anyone would struggle with that.

But our health takes priority and I hope once the worst of the virus is over there’ll be plenty OT still available. If not I’ll adapt as always.
The day is gonna come when we’re all gonna have to testify.

I'm not doing any during this pandemic, my life and my family's health is more important.

Are repicks going ahead in anyone else's office?

A colleague on late collections was saying they had put in for one of the early duties and a higher contract but now they can't because of CV19 and having to watch their children in the morning due to no school/childcare.. Thought it was a little pants to lose out that way.

I thought perhaps they might postpone the signings until this all went by but evidently not. Didn't know what to tell him.

I’m currently averaging 20 hours a week over time. Iv stopped listening to the news, I have hand sanitizer on me which I use at the end of every loop, I don’t go near anyone in the street (which are deserted Tbf) and I go into the office a little later when everyone else has gone.

Have you looked at signing up for in-work benefits? There’s no sanctioning / conditionality in practice with Universal Credit at the moment, so I’d see any extra money as worthwhile while this situation is ongoing. If there are any kids in the household, the difference would be even more substantial.
