In light of the unions recent proposal and Royal mails catastrophic response, it seems to me that RM want us to walk out so they can get out of paying us. So in the interests of all concerned, why don't they just keep a skeleton staff of drivers on to deliver and collect the CV19 essential stuff and furlough the rest of us? That way the govt foots the bill, RM save a shitload and we don't have to put ourselves on the frontline of danger and we still get 80% of our wages! Less staff so plenty of space for 2 metre rule and PPE and a van for everyone still working,. Only deliver 'essential stuff'. Everybody as happy as they can be.

Didn't want to say this earlier but I've had a couple of drinks so f**k It! RM, Heaven forbid and I hope it never happens but as soon as the first postie goes down with this you are gonna be branded as murderers and the public are gonna crucify you!

It’s very simple. The last thing the government want right now is 110,000 postal workers adding to their furlough bill, most of whom are on half decent money (let’s be honest, we complain about the job but never the money which is a fair amount).
NHS staff are being threatened and told not to post anything about a shortage of PPE. RM will have a similar deal with the Govt - RM won’t furlough the workforce, in return the Govt will turn a blind eye to what’s going on with ignoring safety measures.
I feel our only solution is making as many aware as possible.

The day is gonna come when we’re all gonna have to testify.

Why?
If you are sub 60 and healthy then this virus probably has less chance of killing you than a road traffic accident.
Imagine if we all started saying that 'Because I might get hit by a car while posting my round I want to sit at home and have the government pay me 80% of my wages'.
It's ridiculous.
As for protecting others - you just have to be careful to avoid getting too close to people. You are supposed to be delivering on your own and stepping back from doors when delivering parcels. The public should be careful too and avoid going near us. It's common sense.
Things still need to carry on. People during the war didn't stop and request 80% pay for sitting in a bunker because they were worried a bomb might drop on their heads while they were woking.

I am currently isolated for 12 weeks as I have previously had cancer! I am now being paid ZERO wages as I exhausted the company sick pay while I was having chemotherapy, radiotherapy and surgery for breast cancer, me and the hundreds of other posties in this position should at least be furloughed, this is out of our control and if we caught this virus it could easily finish us off so we have no choice but to stay at home! I do not need the added stress of where my family’s next meal is going to come from!!

You make some valid points. 1500-1800 people die on the roads every year. Most of them are quite young. And we don't ban cars. The lockdown if it is to continue for months and months, will do more damage to people than the virus itself. Poverty kills, diverting resources to fight coronavirus and stopping things like testing for cancer, kills. Not being able to fund the NHS for the next decade cause we've crashed the economy kills too.norris9 wrote:Why?

Coronavirus will be used as a case study in the years to come, for how we overreact to immediate scary problems, but totally ignore anything that's even remotely distant.
That said, coronavirus is a particularly nasty virus, there are no good options from this position. We're going to do significant damage regardless of what action we take. Really we should have been more prepared to test, contact trace, and contain the disease. That was a huge failure.

The attitude of these armchair scientists telling us to calm down is why Royal Mail need to get a grip on conditions.
I'm pretty sure there's probably some of these people in every office, happily putting everyone else in danger because just because *they're* not too worried.
"Ridiculous"......"just carry on"
In total, in an unmitigated epidemic, we would predict approximately 510,000 deaths in GB
We estimate that in the absence of interventions, COVID-19 would have resulted in 7.0 billion infections and 40 million deaths globally this year

Agree 100%. The ‘carry on as normal’ crew are incredibly ignorant at best.sindba wrote:The attitude of these armchair scientists telling us to calm down is why Royal Mail need to get a grip on conditions.

Last time I checked, the soldiers in the war weren't sitting in the bunker with their family.norris9 wrote:Why?

Nobody is advocating no mitigation. What people are questioning, is whether the solution is going to be more damaging than the problem.sindba wrote:The attitude of these armchair scientists telling us to calm down is why Royal Mail need to get a grip on conditions.

Locking down the economy to such an extent, especially on the basis this needs to go on for months to be effective, is going to be extremely damaging to peoples lives, health and well-being. It will cost lives in itself.
There is no current perfect option, but there's a balance to be struck here.

I don't see how keeping people more people alive can possibly be "more damaging" than letting more die.Murdoch wrote:Nobody is advocating no mitigation.
