Collection letterboxes have been much busier than usual.

The letterboxes in my area have been busy this week. Normally youd get 50 in the main ones and 5 or less in the suburb boxes. That's with the main ones getting 3 collections a day and the suburb boxes getting just one at 4pm.

Well the last week the numbers of letters have been 4 times the usual amount. About 20 letters in each box where youd expect 5 letters or less. And the main boxes absolutely snowed under. Like christmas pressure without the christmas red cards, more just white envelopes.

Asking around my office, the theory seems to be that due to either
1. Relatives sending letters to loved ones to check if they are okay
2. People taking up letter writing as a hobby due to being in lockdown and bored out their minds. Also give them a nice excuse to leave the house. "Yes mr plod I am just posting my letters!!"

Has anyone else experienced busier letter boxes in your area ? On collection duties. It would be interesting to know if this is happening across the country !

Start of last week was pretty much as you described but drastically dropped off by Thursday. The businesses are starting to close now so is likely to be less mail from them too.

I expect more birthday cards to be sent. Bought online and delivered to the sender, sender then sends to birthday girl/boy.

In one way you would expect business post to go down as they are shut, but maybe now a lot will be working from home they may need to send documents to their colleagues addresses instead of just handing them over in an office.

A lot of people will be in financial difficulty so maybe that increases the amount of post.

I believe these are the reasons for posted letters increase, probably is a coping mechanism .

Saw a bunch of business mail going out, could be businesses are writing to customers informing them of changes / closures due to Covid-19

I've just emptied a box on my rural which just has a 1pm collection. Normally completely empty. Opened it today and there were 9 letters in it. Made me smile I've got to be honest. This box is in the middle of nowhere right in the countryside. Fair enough it hasn't been emptied since Saturday but I'm still very happy to see people sending more letters again
