Anyone else noticing a big increase in garden and driveway gates that are normally just left open now being shut and latched by homeowners?
It's almost like some kind of medieval superstitious thinking... these people obviously believe that keeping their garden gate shut will ward off the virus and give them some kind of protection.
What these people don't seem to realise is that they're actually increasing the risk to themselves and others as everyone who now visits their property has to touch the latch on the gate.

Noticed it a bit, I've started leaving gates open where they are for multiple places of residence, I'm also not keen on the recent facebook messages for people to clean they're letter boxes etc.. I would rather they leave them as they are, better than some half arsed attempt at cleaning which would more likely be adding germs to them.

Agreed... a quick spit and polish of the letterbox is probably not ideal right now.sorefeet17 wrote:Noticed it a bit, I've started leaving gates open where they are for multiple places of residence, I'm also not keen on the recent facebook messages for people to clean they're letter boxes etc.. Had a few locked, not a problem to me, I simply mark it as inaccessible. Biggest problem I had yesterday was entire families in gardens, kids running round, tents setup etc. Most adults will walk slowly and you can back off and tell them you’ll put their mail on the floor/step/top of bin. Kids though tend to run straight to you ‘Hi Postman Pat got anything for us?!’
In the past I used to write ‘no access - dog loose’ might have to amend that to children loose!

I'd advise you (and others like you) to start living in the real world asap.
It'll be better for you in the long run.

What on earth are you on about?
As it happens I don't give a toss about whether I catch it or not so I don't seem to know why I'm supposed to ''get a grip''... I was just commenting on the silly superstitious people all shutting their gates (and the irritation I now have in opening and closing them)

No you are correct. I've encountered people actually tying their gates shut on my duty too. I am just leaving gates open now, to try and minimise the contact I have with them, and customers understand why.wacko74 wrote:circles wrote:Get a grip on yourself.wacko74 wrote:Anyone else noticing a big increase in garden and driveway gates that are normally just left open now being shut and latched by homeowners?

Got to a property where the gate was open. I didn't touch it. And as I left I heard a voice inside saying "Good the postie didn't touch the gate!"
Certainly leaving them open would seem a sensible idea from house holders for now...

I`ve had more gates shut last week than before, it`s pissing me off as is no need to close a gate anyone can open and increase my exposure risk.
I always leave them open unless I can hear a dog barking inside.
I`m lucky I still have a bit of hand gel left and I`m using it as much as I can, hopefully it will last until I get more from RM.

It’s alrught, Rambo over there has already criticised those postal workers for self isolating and protecting/shielding loved ones. What a hero, he’ll be the last one standing, delivering that final dominos pizza leaflet, shouting at us for being wimps.LouBarlow wrote:You probably need to watch the news.circles wrote:Get a grip on yourself.wacko74 wrote:Anyone else noticing a big increase in garden and driveway gates that are normally just left open now being shut and latched by homeowners?

Social and main stream media has turned you all into pathetic children
Oh and btw, all you "self isolaters"..?
Only kiddin' yerselfs on lads I'm afraid to say
But don't worry, us real workers will do all the graft while you lot sit on your arse after voluntarily imprisoning yourself in your house for an as yet unspecified period of time.’

Yeah, you would have thought the 'just the flu bro' cretins would have gotten the message by now, but hell, even the president of the USA is relying on that principle now, despite rapidly escalating rates of infection out there, so soon enough we will see if our heroic friend here has the right idea, as we watch it play out in real time.HTPostman wrote:It’s alrught, Rambo over there has already criticised those postal workers for self isolating and protecting/shielding loved ones. We f****d up big time by not taking this seriously, and we too will see the results of this in a few weeks time, but the states are in for a rude awakening. Look at countries and territories like Germany, Singapore, South Korea, Hong Kong et al - all areas that took it seriously early and locked s**t down by doing mass testing. They have largely contained the issue, and there is a common theme. Take it seriously. There are still swathes of the public here who are not, and we will all end up suffering.

RM need to get on to the media asking anyone, without animals or small children with houses on busy roads, to please reduce our, and their, risk of coming into contact with the virus off the garden gate by actively securing it open.
I'm also pissed off with all the loiterers in front gardens and streets, with their dogs, one of which has already granted me with an impressive leg bruise while on a flaming lead. The bemused owner must never have actually passed a postie before with it.

You’d hope the message will get across eventually. I’ve banged on about this for the last few weeks - at best, 10% of people with symptoms are being tested. Just look at the figures as at 1.30pm today. That means there’s more likely to be at least 6.8 million with the virus. And that’s assuming those secretive countries (China, North Korea) are reporting accurately.LouBarlow wrote:Yeah, you would have thought the 'just the flu bro' cretins would have gotten the message by now, but hell, even the president of the USA is relying on that principle now, despite rapidly escalating rates of infection out there, so soon enough we will see if our heroic friend here has the right idea, as we watch it play out in real time.HTPostman wrote:It’s alrught, Rambo over there has already criticised those postal workers for self isolating and protecting/shielding loved ones. Plus no one knows the long term implications, whether those who’ve had it will have reduced lung capacity, might suffer from complications in the future.
But still, it’s just like the flu right....

No access to gates that are locked, latched, tied-up with wire, shoelaces etc... anything that takes me more than 5 seconds to open. Some people are still opening their doors when I'm putting mail/packets through. I had to say in quite a stern, serious voice (that even surprised me) to an elderly customer "Please don't open the door!" yesterday. She said OK. I think it's still a learning curve for all of us and can catch us out at anytime. We're doing things we've not evolved or been programmed to do. It feels unnatural but completely necessary in these strange times.
