What precautions should should I take to protect postmen and women?
There are clear instructions in the testing kit on how to package the sample safely - please place the sample into the supplied corrugated cardboard box and then into a plastic envelope.

Following advice from the Office of the Chief Medical Officer:

NHS workers will be required wash their hands immediately before and after sample collection, and again before packaging

They should also wipe the external packaging with a disinfectant wipe
How safe is it for postmen and women? Is there a risk they will get infected?
The health of our colleagues is our first priority. Royal Mail has worked in partnership with the Chief Medical Officer to ensure that the process is safe for our colleagues. The Chief Medical Officer has consulted with a panel of experts on the safe transport of the completed COVID-19 test kits. The following steps have been put in place to prevent any cross-contamination:

NHS workers will be required to wash their hands immediately before and after sample collection, and again before packaging
They should also wipe the external packaging with a disinfectant wipe
The return packaging that will be used for the completed test kits complies with WHO Category B packaging requirements for the safe transport of infectious viruses
We have also introduced an additional measure to give our postmen and women extra protection. Collection drivers will be issued with plastic bags so that they don’t have to touch the item directly. They will use the ‘inverted bag technique’ which picking up these items - putting their hand into the bag, turning it inside out and then sealing it. Full operational guidance will follow next week.
We are also reminding colleagues to wash their hands before, during and after their rounds, in line with guidance we have already issued.

NHS workers can post their sample back at one of 13,000 priority postboxes by 9am Monday to Friday. These priority postboxes will be located close to Post Offices and Customer Service Points. They will be able to find their nearest priority postbox on the Royal Mail app and website very soon.

We could all take some advice from this. This is a significant win for Royal Mail. We've had a lot of people on here saying they just want to deliver the important stuff.
Well now's our chance! This is where you truly earn that key-worker status. This is something that is actively helping in the battle against coronavirus and it's something we can take pride in. Don't blow it for us!

It's not directed at you gb93. It's for all of us. 'The whole is greater than the sum of it's parts'.

Let's hope these kits aren't made in the People's Republic of China.

Spanish capital ditches ‘unreliable’ Chinese coronavirus test kits
- Madrid stops using the kits and health ministry asks for them to be replaced after tests suggest they only have a 30 per cent accuracy level

Trusting NHS people to wipe the packaging etc. I notice that the tax dodgers don’t want to touch the possibly dangerous returns either. Not impressed at all with this announcement. If it does live 72 hours on hard surfaces,48 hours on card and 24 on paper how many colleagues hands will it have touched before it reaches the destination. Minimising risk is what we should be doing not running towards it.

I noticed that the Army and Fire Service have been enlisted to deliver supplies now too. So the unions dream of us becoming the 4th emergency service look to have gone up in smoke.

What’s the betting too that amazon won’t deliver to the middle of nowhere with their share either.
Sure can be ,unless you are planing on opening them and inserting them in any of your cavities.

Not particularly bothered about them as chances are I will be delivering one to my own address and then taking it back to the DO  .

I get it there is pandemic, but don't get paranoid. If I was thinking that way i would have to set the tent in the garden for the missus as she is a nurse ffs , and even worse on the ward in the hospital that currently appears to be being prepared for the "apocalypse scenario" .

Keep it together guys/gals, as previously mentioned by scoobydo we collect stool, urine and tissue samples from letterboxes on regular basis.

Absolutely disgusting attitude especially coming from someone that lives with an nhs worker. The same kind of attitude that will kill thousands of more people in the UK in the coming weeks. Hundreds of thousands worldwide, because they aren't taking it seriously.

This virus isn't the same as collecting stool or blood tests for hepatitis or some other disease there is a cure for. It is severely contagious and because it is new, no one knows fully how it works. Even the top minds in the world are all speculating.

There should be a full lockdown in the uk, essential services only. And I mean nhs essential. Supermarkets too. Not royal mail wanting to deliver junk mail. It's an absolute disgrace that we are still opened and potentially infected hundreds of thousands of people while delivering pizza leaflets.

We need to take this seriously. We are two weeks behind italy and look at their rates at the minute.

I'm amazed that some guys in here still think that royal mail are relevant in the grand scheme of things. We haven't been relevant I
years and never will be again. Junk mail and Bills is not relevant We should not be classed as key workers. They should have closed to get the 80% wage packet.

Yeah thanks for reminding me of my signature. I'm sure not going to blow it for this company & union at this time. With half baked ideas & no concern apart from lip service for its workers or members health & safety

I have absolutely no issue with collecting these.

I would understand those who are, or are living with/caring for vulnerable people not wanting to do this, but it is essential work and IMO much more important than delivering the latest tank top from QVC.

Surely it would be better for these health workers to drop the used testing kit at their workplace and then forward them in bulk rather than single items through the postal system?

It wouldn't work though, would it? We get tested, test negative, go out on your round and catch it from touching someones gate and inadvertently wiping your eye. We should be closed, end of.
