Postal workers in Royal Mail deal

Postal workers have reached a deal with Royal Mail on pay and conditions, ending a long-running dispute.

The Communication Workers' Union said its members voted by 64% in favour of an agreement, and will now receive a pay rise of 6.9% over two years.

Postal workers staged strikes across the country over the summer, hurting mail deliveries.

Royal Mail said it could not afford to increase workers' pay, amid increased competition from more efficient rivals.

Tough competition

This latest pay deal sets a benchmark for the postal industry, the Communication Workers' Union (CWU) said.

"The CWU has always recognised that change is needed in the Royal Mail and this agreement demonstrates that the union is leading the change agenda," Dave Ward, the CWU's secretary general said.

Since Royal Mail lost its monopoly status on post deliveries at the start of 2006, 17 operators have entered the UK mail market.

This has created fierce competition for the former monopoly - particularly in the more profitable business post sector.

Postal workers have overwhelmingly backed a deal on pay and conditions finally ending their long-running dispute.

The Communication Workers Union (CWU) said its members voted by 64% in favour of an agreement and will now receive a pay rise of 6.9% over two years.

Turnout in the ballot was also 64%. The union said it would now be at the heart of implementing changes to working practices in the Royal Mail, one of the issues at the centre of the bitter dispute.

Postal workers across the country were involved in a long-running campaign of industrial action since the summer, including a number of strikes, which crippled mail deliveries.

Dave Ward, the union's deputy general secretary, said: "Rather than accept market rate strategy for pay, this deal sets the benchmark for the whole of the postal industry to follow.

"The CWU has always recognised that change is needed in the Royal Mail and this agreement demonstrates that the union is leading the change agenda.

"The strong acceptance of this deal by postal workers shows that they also recognise that change is needed in the business."

A Royal Mail spokesman said: "We warmly welcome this strong 'yes' vote - it's a green light to allow the company to modernise to enable it to compete in a tough market where competition from rival operators and other forms of communication is rapidly intensifying.

"We will now be taking immediate steps to ensure postmen and women get the benefit of the pay deal in good time for Christmas."

Business Secretary John Hutton said: "This is a good news for consumers, the company and its employees. Staff have given the Royal Mail a mandate for modernisation that will make sure the company is flexible and competitive with a long-term future."

The decision ends a long-running dispute over pay and concerns about job cuts resulting from Royal Mail's modernisation plans.

Today's agreement will see postal workers receive a 6.9 per cent pay rise over two years and will ensure that they play a role in implementing change, a CWU statement said this afternoon.

"Rather than accept market rate strategy for pay this deal sets the benchmark for the whole of the postal industry to follow," said CWU deputy general secretary Dave Ward.

"The CWU has always recognised that change is needed in Royal Mail and this agreement demonstrates that the union is leading the change agenda."

Mr Ward added that the acceptance of the deal by postal workers "shows that they also recognise that change is needed in the business".

Royal Mail insists changes are necessary in order for the company to remain competitive following the liberalisation of the postal market.

Fears had been raised that 40,000 workers could be laid off as a result.

Mark my words, in each delivery office the first time a screw tries to force someone to cover someone elses sick absence or annual leave will be the last. Who will be using their cars and racing around like Jesse Owens to get back for a spot of unpaid overtime once they try that crap?

I think most of us are already that P*ssed Off with RM that users of private cars, OT & rushing round will become extinct apart from a few st*pid D**CKS. Both the CWU & RM have managed to kill off any remaining goodwill we may have had for this company. From now on it is purely an 8 hour a day job.

People don't want Royal Mail to be in trouble. It's part of the background of their lives and they'd like to believe that everyone is happy and all is well, with life as they saw it was in Greendale when they were young and carefree. They're hoping things will be all right now. In most people's minds, Royal Mail remains Royal Mail and isn't nasty commercial Consignia that might not have cared for public service. We'll have to cut through the illusion if we want people to wake up to the real situation. The public service needs fixing whilst the government still retain control of the company; the business vultures are circling above Postman Pat now.

how much have you been paid to say that !? the mail is much heavier now than even just two years ago ! and besides who else can make a first class letter pay to be delivered next day miles away ? - sorry but you are deluded by the spin if you think that we needed to change ! are you related to alan by any chance ? we werent broke , never have been so WHY try to fix us ? we were making profits for years and efficient - now we will be played with delibratley ans proberbly sold off like british rail,bt,e.t.c. dont believe the hype !! great tune from PUBLIC ENEMY ! i suggest go and play it as for being upset - yes i am , theres a difference in being upset as i watch a great proud job being messed up and a bad loser in the vote !

Get real. How much of domestic mail is important anymore?? YOU may think customers think the world of us and their mail is the be all and end all but its not any longer and hanging on to that argument won't do us any good at all.

Its all perception - our customers the ones we deliver to have the temerity to think that their post is important. Whereas AC and AL perceive or even beleive that only if you are a bulk mailer or a DSA user is your mail important. The poor old postie wether typing at a MDEC, sorting in a Sorting Office or Mail Centre etc, or actually delivering the letters as a walking/driving man are, and will always be caught between the two.

IMO If we loose sight of the fact that the receivers mail is an important part of our work and service, then whatever AL and AC bring in to maximise profit and flexibility wont be worth a jot as we will loose the Public and eventually the business.
