Union update : Update no meeting see page 2 of the thread

Just read the message to every office regarding today’s meeting and to be fair it’s pretty thorough.

The Communications Union

We are meeting Royal Mail at 1pm today. In advance of this meeting we are publishing to you some of our key demands on the Health and Safety of our members.

It is clear to us that government guidance on social spacing is not being followed in offices across the UK. It is also clear to us that our members do not have the sanitizers, masks and gloves they need to be comfortable carrying out their roles.

From today we want a process / check off in every office to ensure the above is in place.

Also from today:

• * The operation must cease the use of shared vans immediately and strict guidelines on social distancing must be introduced in every office (2 meters apart)
  
  * In managing the operation as sick absence/self-isolation increases, absorption must now be suspended. A national decision needs to be taken on this today.
  
  * An agreement must be made on how the company is treating vulnerable workers or workers who have seriously vulnerable people at home.
  
  * All local managers and reps should meet tomorrow morning on a mandatory basis. This meeting should record and implement a plan to deal with any shortages of PPE and look at options to increase social spacing. These options should include consideration to implementing night shifts in offices to lessen pressure on IPS, introducing staggered start times on a temporary basis, deliveries going out later and more flexible attendance patterns.
  
  * In order to protect the workforce and deal with operational contingency planning, the company and the union should set up working groups at every level. These groups will ensure the true picture on the ground is reflected in any ongoing discussions.

We will update you all following the meeting with Royal Mail.

Basically laying out what they intend to talk to management regarding the current Covid-19 outbreak.


Ceasing use of shared vans.
Agreement on looking after vulnerable workers.
PPE shortages.
Staggered start times including introduction of Night shift in DO's for IPS as options for increased social spacing.

Certainly is, there's going to be plenty of Dom's with headaches trying to implement it, can't see RM doing their usual and ignoring the union on this one, imagine how bad it would look !

The problem is off the charts. The measures needed to reduce the spread to a level acceptable under government guidelines will cripple the chain.

Once the measures are in, there’s no sight of when they’ll be lifted.

Saying that van shares are back and everyone is back in on five days etc is going to be so hard when you need some clear reason as to why things are now fine.

So in the meantime we seem to just be pretending. We’re good at that.

Thanks for the update. Just hope RM get there heads out of the sand and get this sorted ASAP. They will probably bury there heads even deeper just for the £££

cripple the chain this is to save life rm need to comply with what the government are telling them if they cant business are being told to shut this at work is not are problem its rm they need to address the problem today tomorrow if the 2 meter rule is not in place im not going in full stop stop and think this is your life rm are asking you to put on the line or your loved ones things need to change or royal mail need to shut down

Just talking about my own mail centre but absentee rate is already pretty high. Even with the casuals brought in, social distancing won't be a challenge.

(Unless you count for the staff who stand together and endlessly chat. We all have to make sacrifices.)

Too little, too late springs to mind.

We have had months watching this spread from country to country, so we can't say we didn't know what was coming. Yet only now do we insist on PPE etc.

Poor leadership by RM & CWU has lead to members being put at an avoidable risk.
