How do you feel about working full time for 20% more?

Post by blobneb »

We could be safe from this virus. But because the Royal Mail see Mother's Day cards as essential work, apparently we all have to risk our lives and the safety of the country now. If you couldn't see their attitude for the pisstake it was, I hope you can now, while you're out exposing yourself and your families to this deadly virus for the "essential work" of Screwfix magazines and eBay jewellery. Yes we should have a skeleton service for Coronavirus and other essential mail / medical suppleis, groceries and toiletries. All other services should stop.

The majority of the work force could self-isolate, with people volunteering to remain as part of the skeleton service if they feel it's worth more to them than a 20% pay cut. Otherwise we're being forced to risk our health and the safety of our communities for corporate greed. It's nothing else. No job or company is worth sacrificing that for.

I thought that deal was for those workers in businesses that had to close entirely...

I thought it's for any worker whose job has been suspended because of coronavirus. Can be half a firm. Just the jobs that can't be done. E.g. waitresses in a restaurant who can't help deliver food.

Let's face it, a lot of our work isn't essential. It's to enable a consumerist economy. That's not more important right this moment than getting a grip on this virus. We should only be delivering things that are actually essential while the rest stay home. Those people who are not deemed ESSENTIAL to this basic service should be at 80% pay. I'd be happy with that.

Isn't making sure that what is left of the economy keeps on rolling "consumerist economy" is the economy if people can buy items while isolated isn't that a good thing and more so valuable to try and keep what we have got left of the economy then when all this shite eventually passes we can then build on it? so I'm thinking its important if you CAN afford to still spend and buy do so!! The local pub our family had a booking for on mother's day is doing takeaways so that's what we are hoping to do (helps support local pubs) at times like this consumerism is probably not a bad thing! :cuppa

Except for when the risk outstrips the benefits. What's the benefit to the economy of entire mail centres coming down the coronavirus and contaminating every surface that goes past them? All those workplaces where a coronavirus-infected person has been have to be cleaned down - what happens to the mail that has already left the building? I really don't think you're appreciating the scale of sacrifice in other areas of the economy. Why has everyone collectively decided that delivery drivers can be f****d, unlike retail workers, theme park operators, etc. We still work in large groups, we touch surfaces that the public touch every day. If it turns out that anyone catches this virus from their post, or that a postie is a super spreader, then people might start looking at this very differently.

Let's hope something like this is not posted on supermarketworkerschat.co.uk or other similar sites of key workers chat.co.uk with possibly the odd .com thrown in.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.
My BFF Clash
The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

Except that tbh if I worked in a supermarket, I'd know that I was risking my health for other people to be able to LIVE. Not so that they can peruse a bloody magazine out of boredom. I'd much rather be relieving those workers of the risk by delivering bags they've picked and packed to people in their homes, then fannying about delivering cards.

100% agree. Despite the govt, supermarket bosses and workers pleading, people are still panic buying and it’s starting to get confrontational.

I’d be much happier if the govt took control of supermarkets, rationed food into food parcels and we teamed up with their network of delivery drivers to deliver them alongside only essential parcels.
The day is gonna come when we’re all gonna have to testify.
