If this thread, and the comments under CWU facebook posts, are anything to go by then the overwhelming feedback would be 'we do not want to put ourselves and our families at more risk than we need to'ssdd wrote:And what would that feedback be? What's the alternative?oxymoron wrote:Maybe get some feedback from their members first .ssdd wrote:I really don't get the negativity towards the Union's decision. I would see the ideas being borne out as something not all that different to what a lot of us do already.
The bulk of the work would revolve around getting vital supplies to wherever needed.
I think some people may see the term 'emergency services' and jump to conclusions.
I would stand by the Union's decision. This is an unprecedented time, and it would be an opportunity for CWU and RM to actually work together for the greater good.
To all the folks who think otherwise, just WHAT alternative would you have had the Union present..?

Fair point, but the Union explicitly states that we would not be doing anything that would increase risk, without the proper PPE.Acca Dacca wrote:If this thread, and the comments under CWU facebook posts, are anything to go by then the overwhelming feedback would be 'we do not want to put ourselves and our families at more risk than we need to'ssdd wrote:

So far, no one's come up with an alternative Union proposition towards RM...

Why should we?ssdd wrote: So far, no one's come up with an alternative Union proposition towards RM...
The Union haven't come up with a viable alternative.
The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

I offer wonder what goes people’s heads sometimes, I really do.
Royal Mail has a fantastic network (if used properly), we can use it transport vital supplies, that’s what the union are getting at. Not visiting customers to see if they are ok or need anything from the shop. These home food companies like Wiltshire farm foods etc may be one overwhelmed and maybe need to source some of the work our way

Actually visiting the elderly is exactly what he is proposing,postman_jack wrote:I offer wonder what goes people’s heads sometimes, I really do.

Postal workers can play a crucial role in to keep everyone in this country connected & informed, delivering medical aid, checking on the elderly and vulnerable, delivering local to local services and supporting people working from home.

Well how could they, when no one, so far, (as members of the Union), has put forward a viable alternative?clashcityrocker wrote:Why should we?ssdd wrote: So far, no one's come up with an alternative Union proposition towards RM...
The Union haven't come up with a viable alternative.
Or was it that there were other ideas that somehow didn't reach CWU or were ignored?

How about everything else they said apart from visiting the elderly and vulnerable. Would that have been a better proposition?

The majority of union members voted to strike
The alternative to striking is we do not strike yet reballot later and we continue to do our jobs to description - thats it
Why does there need to be an alternative?

Obviously due to the Coronavirus crisis, the gameplay has changed. If we just said 'we're not going to strike at the moment', surely that would give RM carte blanche to sneak in their executive action unchallenged. A reballot later would be too late!Acca Dacca wrote:What do you mean by alternative though?ssdd wrote:Well how could they, when no one, so far, (as members of the Union), has put forward a viable alternative?clashcityrocker wrote:Why should we?ssdd wrote: So far, no one's come up with an alternative Union proposition towards RM...

I still think the Union's proposal was the best we could have come up with, given the circumstances. It's positive, proactive, puts us in a good light, and puts the onus back onto RM to respond in a likewise manner.
Or are they now going to plead poverty after offering all employees full pay on covid leave...?

It's obviously just a fly move to make us get the public onside if royal mail agree to any of it then that's fine.if they don't then it makes them look worse it's win win for union pr.all we will be doing is what we do now anyway we're not going to be helping people other than delivering things.

So one by one.
Delivering medical aid. - What medical aid needs delivering and where? Who currently does it?
Checking on the old and vulnerable - from 2 metres away obviously. What happens if they have a problem?
Delivering local to local services - what does that even mean?
Supporting people working from home - how? Postie my internet has crashed. Have you tried turning it off and on?
You want alternatives:
Let's deliver sandbags to areas liable to flooding. Let's make and maintain flood defences.
In rural areas we could mount undercover operations to see who is involved in illegal hare coursing, badger baiting and dog fights.
We could infiltrate stables to find out the extent of illegal horse doping.
We are embedded in every community. We are trusted. We could do these things. In fact I am dashing off a note to the PM to get his views.
The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.
