I know it hasn't happened yet but does anyone know what happens if schools etc are closed with regards to staying home to look after children?

It's on the Coronavirus Guidance Q & A's found here: https://www.myroyalmail.com/node/14595
POLICY
A colleague has a child whose school is closed and needs to be at home to look after them
Where a colleague has to look after a dependant, such as a child, our normal approach applies. Colleagues can take holiday, unpaid time off or work flexibly. They should agree this with their line manager.

If schools end up being closed, we are looking at similar circumstances to Italy and Spain, in that we will all be in lock down anyway.

That's an another half-assed policy bearing in mind that the schools could be closed for at least 4 months.

4 months annual leave?
4 months unpaid leave?
WTF does 'work flexibility' even mean for the bulk of RM staff?

Grandparents aren't really an option are they?

This crisis is really showing up Royal Mail's reactive 1970s management structure. It's embarrassing me and I'm just a postie, if I were a manager I think I would start pretending I was on the dole.

It's not just RM but everyone that could be in this position. It sounds like enforced unpaid leave will be the order of the day possibly for extended periods of time. Not wishing to encourage panic, & I am a pessimist/realist but I think we will have more of an idea how bad or not so bad it is going to get by this time next week.
The indecisive nature during the Brexit negotiations seems to have stuck to the current government and they are refusing to make decisions on any actions in favour of waiting for everyone else to take action for them. If China had closed down their airports on February 14th we wouldn't be where we are now but the horse has bolted now.
The views I express here are mine alone and do not represent the views of Royal Mail Group.

True but I believe in these countries (Italy atleast) the postal service continued as it was deemed an essential service.

What about other couriers (who aren't each country's equivalent of RM)?

PostItalia is still majority owned by the Italian government, they wouldn't have had much say in it.

At this point they are sticking with annual leave first, unpaid leave as a second choice and working flexibly if imagine means to adjust hours/days to coordinate perhaps with your partner or other primary caregiver.

The crux of it is, Royal Mail are not budging...
Where members have to take time off to look after dependents they will be able to take annual leave, unpaid time off or be able to work flexibly.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.
