It's worth noting that the Spanish flu (1918) and Swine flu (2009), were the same strain H1N1.

While in 1918 it killed tens of millions, in 2009 it killed about the same numbers as seasonal flu does.

I was just contrasting the differences, to point out that we're far better placed to deal with outbreaks now, than in 1918. So it is in no way going to be as bad as 1918.

If we compare 1918 to 2020, and the differences in infrastructure, hygene, food supplies, healthcare, medicine, sanitation, nutrition, vaccinations.

Much of the deaths back then, were related to malnourishment, and poor hygene.

In fact you will find they had zero obesity and the ones that made adulthood were in fact very fit so fit most got called up and many died in WW1 but the 1918 Spanish flu killed most in the 20-40 year age range where as now it is older and very young.

It mutated into a much deadlier form in its second wave late 1918/1919. Interestingly they believe conditions of WW1 contributed to this. As many people with the deadliest form, were sent home from the trenches, malnourished, and were put into overcrowded hospitals with poor hygene, where the more deadly form was allowed to run rampent and then spread to the wider community. The second wave, conversely hit people with stronger immune systems harder than those with weaker immune systems.

Like I said, we're much better prepared nowadays, Swine Flu had a vaccine prepared fairly quickly, and was rolled out en masse. I certainly remember getting it. It was also 95% effective in preventing people getting swine flu. It's very difficult for a pandemic to come back for a second bite nowadays, we usually quickly get it under control.

You raise an interesting point about obesity, clearly we have more access to nutritional information, access to healthy food, and an abundance of availability nowadays. Compared to 1918 and post WW1, where food shortages were a real problem, and malnourishment was rife, but they had no processed garbage, and grew their own vegetables, raised their own livestock etc. It's interesting that even in the scarcity of war, what they did eat was far healthier than what a large chunk of the population are rountinely eating nowadays. That said, malnourishment is about a deficiency of certain nutrients, and scarcity provides the conditions for that, far better than overabundance does, less people nowadays are malnourished but there are no doubt loads of fat bastards.
