Seniority has a reason, those old man and women did their share of 20,30 or more years of working in all weather conditions and their bodies are not like a 30 years old anymore.

About being kept on the same duty as a new starter, that`s the norm in Rm to get you used with the job, you have plenty of time to be "f*cked over regularly", female or not.
Theres a difference between being kept on a walk for a few weeks to get used to the company and being kept on a walk for over a year because they think you deserve an easy start because you're a woman. If you're in a physically demanding job you need to deal with the fact that one day you won't be able to keep up; footballers retire when they're too old to run around, it should be no different for us. Otherwise the old useless posties get away with murders whilst the new good posties have to pick up the pieces
And there lies the rub! I believe RM are looking to do away with long term employees. Too costly isn't it?
I fear that the job of the future will be so demanding that there will be a high turnover of staff, mostly younger, who will inevitably move on to something else when the stress starts to take its toll.
It doesn't matter if you're male or female. I've seen women, both older and younger, who can do the job better than men. Anyway in a few years time I'm sure the LGBTQIAPK..XYZ community will see to it that we're not allowed to call anyone male or female anymore. There'll just be X or Y babies.
The stuff of science fiction is becoming a reality.

That's a very victorian approach to work.

Taken to absurd levels it could be said to advocating - ''Work them as hard as possible, then throw them out on the scrapheap"

Which is kind of a double whammy when the government give no credence to the fact that people in sedentary jobs can retire later than those in physical jobs, they did increase the state pension age across the board after all.

I agree Seniority is imperfect but at present, there is no perfect system to take its place:

Managerial Appointment to duties: Open to abuse by nepotism and arbitrary decisions unless formalised.
Random Appointment. How often, if weekly or daily this would remove the personal touch customers like, it would also increase incorrect deliveries. If longer it would increase the training budget.

Seniority has major faults around nepotism (manager and long servers get to know each other) and the negative effect it has on the work-life balance of new starters. However, these and most of the other problems (industrial relations) in Royal Mail could easily be sorted by the simple practice of training managers to a professional level and instilling leadership values. Instead RM sends managers on 1-day courses every so often, and then it only deals with processes and policies - and has nothing to do with people management or leadership.

So what you saying is that older posties should quit/change jobs when they get old and physically less able than the younger ones?

And why should they do that when they worked a life time for the same company, are paying in a private RM pension, have mortgages/ loans to pay when it`s easier for younger ones to go find another job?

Seniority has a reason and it`s better with it than without.
What a new starter thinks about it it`s a different story, in time they will get to see the benefits, if they stay in Rm that is.

I'd have say seniority is the only fair way took me 16 years to get my own shift.im 26 years in now but I've done all the reserve floater crap when I started it helps you learn the job.i got the job because a postie took a heart attack on his run and I got the job and his duty was the one I was put on biggest in the office, but that's the way it is.as for female posties any I've worked with over the years work just as hard as guys lift heavy loads aswell.

Get real you lot it doesn't really matter how crap the duty is 2 things never change 1, your start time, 2, your finish time, if you don't wonna do it give it away if you do claim its simple, and if the manager don't like it tough.

All the above is about to change.
The severity of the changes is whether we get a satisfactory outcome in any strike action (?).
