Rossendale residents warned of 'convincing' Royal Mail post scam

Rawtenstall Post Office has reportedly received two fake delivery slips today alone from residents who arrived to pick up packages that weren't there.

A Rossendale resident is warning others to be on the lookout after receiving a scam Royal Mail letter through the post.

Kevin Skillin returned home to find an attempted parcel delivery letter pushed through his letterbox.

The red letter, which was branded Royal Mail, included a telephone number which it asks recipients to call if they want to retrieve their parcel.

None the wiser, Kevin decided to instead straight to the post office in Rawtenstall, where he was told the letter was a scam.

“They said ‘that’s another one’,” said Kevin. “They told me it is a scam and that the number would probably take me through to a premium line.

“I think it would be good to warn other people in Rossendale because there have been two already today.

“There will be older people having to get buses to go and get their parcels. I thought ‘this is wrong’.

The service says: “Scam mail can take the form of fake lotteries and prize draws, get-rich-quick schemes, bogus health cures, investment scams and pyramid schemes.

“Sometimes these can be sent to you if a scammer has got hold of your contact details fraudulently.

“If you're moving home, Action Fraud recommends using a redirection to reduce the risk of identity fraud. They recommend redirecting mail from your old address to your new address for at least a year.

“If you hold power of attorney for somebody, you can apply for a Redirection on their behalf. You can do this if you believe they’re a victim, or are vulnerable to being a victim, of scam mail.”
