Mech mail is counted by the machine. All other mail each mail stream had an "Average Container Fill" (ACF) for a given type of container. When the container gets MIST'd along with any part fill, it's the ACF x whatever the fill level is. Tracked and SDs will be counted as they are scanned
I believe the ACF for a box of flats is 38 , this figure does not reflect the amount of letters that are in some of these. I also believe that anyone doing traffic recording i.e randomly counting the fills deliberately omits any that contain letters.

..and they also contain what normally would be sorted as packets as well. Sometimes I've had boxes of flats with just a couple of thin flats in, don't know why they don't condense the boxes before dispatch from the outward MC

Question.
Is the 8% drop including the DSA mail ? Or is it 8% letters what we handle. I ask because some days (esp sat) i seem to get about 70% DSA mail in the frame. Iam not sure that the overall weight of mail is reducing from what iam taking out daily.

You're right Gand. In a recent Briefing the Area Manager that was talking to us spent a bit of time Reminiscing about "When I was a Postman on Bikes we only had 2 bags of Mail to Deliver ... we didn't have all these parcels....." He looked a bit Flummoxed when we asked him How can he say Mail is dropping of when he only used to have two bags on his bike ... and we've got a van load sat outside? :cuppa

Fair point Tman :hmmmm My Delivery Office hasn't lost any since we lost the bikes, but I'm sure across the business we've probably lost a few thousand. He did admit that we may well have been walking up the path with 10 letters ... and we've still got to walk up that same path even if we've only got 1 letter. :cuppa

Did he forget to add we get paid a hell of a lot more for parcels packets and get paid less for delivering letters especially access mail into the network as a business we lose money on DSA mail that TNT/ UK MAIL make us deliver. It is not our fault that Royal Mail is overstaffed by MANAGERS as Rico said today he has 200 managers/ambassadors running around telling us how good a job it was in the day on god knows how much money! Thing is packets parcels take longer to deliver and are bulkier if Rico wants a return on his shares 200 ambassadors should giveaway to 1500 packet drivers but no as they get Diplomatic protection for they don't do nothing at all!

TBH he should have got a Thank You Card from the CWU .... because he didn't make a very good argument at all. :thumbup We did put it to him that the blame lays firmly at the feet of RM Higher Management. They should be out there chasing business, and offering to undercut the likes of Whistle & UK Mail. We should deliver "Their" Mail (DSA) at a lose, if necessary, and put the competition out of business (I'm sure we're probably not allowed to because of OFCOM rules) :thumbdown

I got the impression that he'd just been told to get out there and put the Company Line, although he didn't seem too convinced in it himself. The problems occur when there's Posties that visit RMC, or go on-line, and actually know a bit about the Real situation... then they ask Akward question. :cuppa
