OUTRAGED residents in Redhill and Reigate have rallied around a postwoman who has been sacked by Royal Mail.

Sharon Falvey,of Huddlestone Crescent, Merstham, who delivered mail to homes in the Wray Common area for 15 years, was fired last week in mysterious circumstances.

Royal Mail has refused to reveal the exact reasons why her employment was terminated.

However, homeowners have demanded to be told why their beloved postwoman will no longer deliver their mail.

Ms Falvey's sacking follows her suspension from work, which the Mirror understands was the result of comments made by her in the Reigate sorting office, in Rushworth Road.

Residents have vowed to fight the decision, with many writing protest letters to Royal Mail and organising a petition.

Royal Mail has refused to comment on the sacking and claimed that it "would not comment on individual cases". The company also refused to give a reason for the dismissal.

A spokesman for Royal Mail also refused to confirm or deny allegations by postal workers and residents that remarks made by Ms Falvey were the reason for her dismissal.

Ms Falvey spoke to the Mirror on Monday to confirm her dismissal and said that she was fighting the decision.

She did not comment any further for fear of jeopardising a pending appeal.

A postman who worked with Ms Falvey, but refused to be named, described her as "harmless" and expressed confusion at the sacking. He added that she was "very outspoken".

Unconfirmed comments from a source inside the Reigate sorting office also suggested that her sacking followed an anonymous complaint about comments she had made.

Grandmother-of-five Pamela Schwenk, 63, of Carlton Road, Reigate,is so outraged at the dismissal she wrote to Royal Mail.

She said: "Sharon has been wonderful. I can't believe this has happened. She knows everyone along this road. We don't get our post very early because she always stops to speak to everyone,but she is a real credit to the community and has every-body's welfare at heart."

The retired teacher added: "She went over and above the call of duty. She did so much for the community and was the best 'Neighbourhood Watch' you could ask for. We must do something."

After collecting mail from the Reigate sorting office,Ms Falvey would then deliver mail to homes in Batts Hill, Woodcrest Walk, Carlton Road, Windmill Way and Downs Wood.

Fred Butcher, 74, of Windmill Way, Reigate, said: "She's a real asset to the people living along these roads. She has been my postwoman for 15 years and I can't believe this has happened."

Father-of-one Sean Felthan, 38, a London taxi driver of The Ridings, Reigate, said: "She always stopped to chat and she goes beyond her postal duties."

Householders living on Ms Falvey's regular route were not informed of the suspension or given a reason for her absence.

Jenny Wyse, 57, of Carlton Road, Reigate,said: "When I hadn't seen her for a while I had no idea what was wrong, I wondered if she may have been put on another round or was ill.

"This comes as a complete shock to me because she did such a good job and was a real part of the community."

RM specalize in such stitch ups , the PO is a bit like New Labour; they TRY and control things without being able to run things and it's responsibility V authority paradox .

RM will see her as a loose cannon that threatens their "system" , at one time; SOMETIMES some common sense & discretion was used and people were seperated . Things would be dismissed as six of one & half a dozen of the other .

The other way was somebody like her would have to take a reprimand if the handling of the case had been botched , it kept Personnel away if nothing else, and things stayed within the building.

Now that Area & Senior Mgt operate by dicktat , there'll be RM "Fact Finding" interviews on investigation , RM will hope people break ranks and " witnesses " tell RM want they want to hear . To RM it'll "look straight on paper" .

This tactic backfired at Burslem with Big Dave , especially at a ET .It's not likely to occur to RM that people will stick together ,but that's their arrogance for you.

She's called RM's bluff by shopping these faceless wonders to the papers , the downside is it'll make RM even more paranoid and defensive , as RM will try and get themselves out of the corner they backed themselves into .

I see two scenarios , RM will play their seige mentality management and it'll go to ET with RM using the sort of solictors that'll try and get David Blunkett a driving licence to try and save the face they've never had anyway.

Or as a damage limitation exercise, they'll reinstate her , move her to a MC and hope she's suitabily chastised and will eventually go quietly or be "persuaded " to go like the poor b*****r Roger, with anxiety & depression that he'll have got from taking on the braindead RM machine in South Wales over junk mail/D2D's .

seen all this macho nonsense in a ex nationalised industry, false imprisionment complaints to the BT Police ,managers physically blocking the door when asking for a rep, the lad they ganged up out of juvenile spite ,was off six weeks with a nervous breakdown.

Saw a guy who used to be a bit scruffy , bit rough and ready ex- labourer ;put in a psychiatric ward due to "counselling in the first instance" by Supervisors /Management ,it's like a throwback to 15-17 years ago with RM .

Indeed some have been known for "going Postal" with horriffic consequences, when pushed too far, I have heard of one incident many years ago, when a Postman was being investigated and the IB went into his house, he shot one dead and wounded another, forgot where, but it was in the south near Essex maybe, you don't need a gun and knife would have done as well.

there's the Charles Buckowski ? Novel from the 70's " Gone Postal " about the US Postal Service.. I'm told all the PO stereotypes & characters are in it, even if it's set 4000+ miles away; across the pond .
He wrote the novel that the film "Angelheart" with Micky Rourke was based on.

A postman has been jailed for life for shooting dead a Royal Mail investigator and trying to murder two others as they searched his home for missing mail.

Mr Justice Hidden at Wolverhampton Crown Court told James Robinson, 28, of Oak Drive, Ellesmere, that the shootings had been "evil and wicked".

He recommended Robinson serve at least 18 years before being considered for early release.

Robinson admitting the murder of Andrew Gardner, and the attempted murder of Pat Tranter and Neil Roberts, at his house in Ellesmere, Shropshire on 3 August last year.

Overpowered by unarmed man

He also admitted the illegal possession of a sawn-off shotgun and possession of a 9mm Beretta pistol with intent to endanger life.

Mr Gardner, 36, of Irby, Wirral, died instantly when Robinson, a shooting club range officer, opened fire on the three investigators after they found missing mail and an illegal stash of bullets in his bedroom.

Mr Tranter, 53, of Blacon, Chester - who was in court to hear the sentence - required major surgery after being hit by four bullets.

Mr Roberts, 31, who avoided injury although he was shot at twice, overpowered Robinson at the scene.

Outside the court, Mr Gardner's widow Fiona called for tighter controls on guns, saying that Robinson would have turned the Shrosphire market town into another Dunblane or Hungerford, had he not been overpowered.

'Worst year of my life'

The dead man's brother, Tony Gardner, said: "We are satisfied that justice has been done."

Mr Tranter added the jail sentence had brought to an end the worst year of his life.

He said: "Not a day has gone by without me reliving some part of that dreadful morning. I will never forgive Robinson for what he did."

Detective Chief Inspector Clive Harding, who led the investigation, said afterwards that there had been no hint until that day that Robinson was a dangerous man.

Robinson, who had worked for Royal Mail in Ellesmere for three years, came under investigation in early 1998 after complaints of missing mail.

Bullet box

A number of postal sacks were found on a council tip in Oswestry and Robinson admitted theft of mail during an interview.

He agreed to allow the three investigators to search his home.

"While searching Robinson's bedroom, Pat Tranter came across a box containing bullets and he told Robinson that the police would have to be called," said Mr Harding.

"At that point Robinson suddenly produced a pistol and started to fire.

"Although he was being fired upon, Neil Roberts launched himself at Robinson. He grappled with Robinson, taking him out on to the landing and the two men tumbled down the staircase.

"Only when they reached the front door was Mr Roberts able to wrestle the gun from Robinson and restrain him."

The case was the first time that West Mercia Police used virtual reality computer graphics to reconstruct the sequence of events during the shooting.

i hope this does not ramble on but good luck in fighting your case. i personally think u will not win. our old rep was outspoken and was suspended from newport iow delivery office in august. on full pay she has now gone. rumour is she done a deal but she got a job supervisor in a store which has a post office those in the know say she got £5k for sitting at home for 3 months and working her new job also then told manager who is an a hole to stuff it. area rep told her it was all bullshit and she would be back to work no probs. but the hassle was all too much.
i hope you are strong and stay strong. the upper tier of managment can not and should not get away with forcing the good hard working posties out of the job.
will the community pressure help i sincerley hope so
