Here's one for you all !!!!!

Post by greynut »

I have been taught today on how to use a track and trace gun. Its a bit like Parcel Force hand held thingy that lets customer sign for
packets, special etc.

They can be used and upgraded to do loads of things. Now heres the thing.....

I was told that they will be upgraded to allow postman to READ GAS AND ELECTRICITY METERS. As posties go to every house ( f***ing' when???) they will get posties to read the meters. I kid you not.

I assume there will be replies to this post?

I heard the same rumour about 6 months ago - 600+ houses on my round so in a 3 month period I would have to go to about 10 per day - they had better cut my round down or the people at the end of my walk will never see me again.

Description:
Data collectors required to read domestic gas and electric meters on a cyclic basis. Duties include completing basic safety checks and inputting readings on to a computerised terminal. Must have own car full driving licence and land line telephone. Previous experience of working outdoors preferable. The hours of work are between 11am to 7pm fixed shift Monday-Friday. Note that this job will require you to work in the evenings and the occasional Saturday. For more information or to apply call ...

So a few points - wage is comparable with ours

But will we get extra allowances for the basic safety checks. My Knowledge more money. Anyway if they want me to do this they had better pay me more. Its bad enough delivering on rub down council estates never mind trying to get in to read a meter.

Well I used to do that job and collect money from prepayment meters in exactly the sort of places you wouldn't want to let your Rottweiler off the lead.
I also changed meters when they were due and installed them.

I can tell you from experience that there are many many places that you wished you didn't have to enter - in some places it was a case of wiping your feet on the way OUT. Apart from the less than salubrious residences there is also the location of the meters, understairs with stuff piled to the ceiling, cellars full of spiders and cobwebs - oh yes I wouldn't envy anyone the task.

I was talking to a meter reader a couple of months ago who told me they were going to introduce new meters which can be read from outside the house. All you do is drive past a row of houses, a device reads the meter as you drive past and job done. If that's right, Allan and Adam will have to give us all buckets and ladders instead and we can clean a few windows for the 40% of the day we're all hanging about doing sod all.

That would fit in perfectly with seasonal pressure.

During the light summer months, we can get "stung" for extra hours by removing wasp nests, and during the winter when it's too cold for wasps, we can get on with the Christmas post.

I would suggest arranging with local newsagents to deliver morning papers and make all those paperboys jobless, but we could probably just about manage evening papers now!!
