Exactly - then the OP should have had the opportunity to apply for the job at which point seniority should come into play - but how long
has the duty been vacant for? Isn't it six months before it has to be advertised for resign (and the OP has only been there since Nov?).

Is the round actually vacant (or is someone on long term sick, so it's not actually vacant)?

I agree with tedebear, the only thing I would query with the local rep is the status of the round that is being referred
to and when it might be advertised. Anything else and the OP could be opening a huge can of worms without firm evidence.

Preach. It's always been like this. In our office we have reserves that only know one duty - one has been there 3 years

If this is the case I must be fooking amazing at my job! In fact, the amount of different duties and crap I get to do, I might just be the best damned postie in the DO!

Only speaking of my experience with RM here. Of all the new starts I've come across, I can count on one hand how many of the females are still in the business.
Now there may be many reasons for this, family, poor management, bullying or just the job itself. RMs retention of staff is shocking as it is, but females are far more likely to say "f**k this sh*t".
If I was a manager I would also be more inclined to go for the softer approach.

It's a bit of a hard subject to moan about as a man, but I do see a bit of this in my office too. Pretty young ladies in my office do often (not always) seem to get preferential treatment when it comes to days off. More Saturdays off than some who have been there years etc. But hey, that's a result of lecherous male managers and not the fault of anyone else.

There are, I'm sure, some fantastic post-ladies and I will speak about what I've seen in my delivery office. We've had 6 ladies in the last 8 years. 1 is now on family friendly mon-thur. 1 now works in callers office. 1 became a line manager after 8 months and 1 works on a flexible parcel duty. 2 were sacked (both for failing to meet the attendance standards).

In our office all of the new starts are treated like crap..... no distinction between male or female.

No wonder the retention is so poor.

This is an outrage! Everyone knows it's only middle-aged male posties who should get preferential treatment!

You, me or anybody else should not get preferential treatment. The seniority system is the fairest way for everyone.

I’m a youngish female and have seen new starters after me get put on a walk and stay on it whilst I’m moved about. I’m normally told my rest day the Saturday before, even in school holidays when I need to sort out childcare so need to know when my rest day a few weeks in advance is they can’t tell me to make my life a bit easier, really annoys me.

Have you ever worked in the caller's office? It certainly isn't a "cushy" job...
