Postman stole cash from cards

A crooked postman could face jail after stealing cash from hundreds of greetings cards and letters bound for Norfolk.

James Garrard, 52, had been a postman for nearly 29 years when he decided to start stealing from people's mail.

Using a small knife he prised open envelopes and over a 12-month period took out hundreds of notes and coins.

However, when members of the public started to complain that letters and cards were going missing, his bosses at Royal Mail launched an investigation.

By sending two test cards into Garrard's round they were able to catch the crooked postman.

At Norwich Magistrates' Court Garrard admitted two charges of stealing postal packets from the Royal Mail Group's Long Stratton delivery office.

The court heard that between July 2006 and July 2007 he stole an estimated 550 letters and £1,240 in cash. He was warned he could face jail when sentenced later this year.

Simon Nicholls, prosecuting, told the court that Garrard began working at the delivery office in 1977.

However, last year Royal Mail customers started to notice post that should have arrived at their homes was going missing.

Mr Nicholls said: “He used a small knife to open the letters and cards. On July 26, two test postal packets were prepared by the Royal Mail and introduced into Garrard's round.

“At about 9.30am he was seen sitting in his Royal Mail van opening the greeting cards. He was approached by Royal Mail investigators who cautioned him. A search of the vehicle revealed four postal packets in the footwell.

“He was taken back to the delivery office and a search of his person revealed another five packets he had opened. In total, nine postal packets were recovered.â€

[quote="TrueBlueTerrier"]Ted Bell, mitigating for Garrard, said: “Clearly he is at risk of prison and he's well aware of that. He and his wife had to sell their house because they could not keep it. They are now living in rented accommodation, and they have for some time been in financial difficulties.â€

There was a guy in my office a couple of years ago stealing cash out of birthday cards, he wouldnt take from cards on his delivery though, he would clear them out of other deliveries ips boxes, putting everyone under suspision.

He was caught eventually though and sacked. It gets better though, he lived on my delivery at the time and I was gladened to see one morning that his flat had gone on fire through the night, destroying his collection of wrestling material which he no doubt paid for with his stolen cash! Justice served!

Guy in our office was pilfering CDs and the IB found a sh*tload of 'em in his locker. But not before a whole load of people were under suspicion and victims of accusatory gossip. Whatever their motivation, thieves are a disgrace to the uniform.
