Re: collecting from the back - just how is this meant to work please? There’s one guy on IPS who constantly tells you to collect from the back (unless he’s not on IPS, in which case he ignores his own advice and collects from the front). At our depot we have those bungee chords...so you have to try and hold the tray in one hand, while pulling the bungee chords with the other hand and then getting the mail into the tray. I consider myself physically fit but it causes strain on the arm holding the tray. How do you lot do it?

empty hands, use one hand to pull away bungee cord, second hand pulls out mail, release bungee cord, hold collected mail with 2 hands, deposit into tray which is on the porter trolley. Not rocket science.
Why would you be holding a tray at same time ?!

Because not every office uses a porter trolley, mine doesn`t and we all collect from front.

Because we no longer have a porter trolley. Some rounds can be 60+ seconds walk away from the IPS (I work in a huge unit) so you don’t want to be back and forth more than you need to.
