Postman who stole £85,000 is jailed

RAYLEIGH A postman who stole £84,959 from letters and parcels has been jailed for 14 months.

Jonathan Crocker, 31, from Rayleigh, Essex, pleaded guilty to ten counts of theft and seven counts of obtaining property by deception at Basildon Crown Court. He asked for other offences to be taken into account.

Crocker was caught after police watched him open a package containing a credit card that they had added to his round in Basildon on October 27 last year. The Royal Mail had become suspicious of him after post went missing on his route.

The court was told that Crocker, who had worked for Royal Mail for 11 years, had committed nearly 70 offences in a three-year period and that when police searched the £370,000 home that he had bought during that time, they found credit cards in different names.

Judge Rupert Overbury told Crocker: “As a postman, you were trusted to deliver post to addresses and not to interfere with any of that mail or information.â€
