Nick b wrote:The mail will still be done by remaining CSS office’s in the area, it is those with just 2 machines in their office that will be closed.
However, the personnel who man the machines will still receive night allowance plus machine allowance up to 5 years after their jobs have gone which makes any great savings questionable.
The staff might get offered EVR or transfer to the local MC.

I wish that they could make the little belts on the stackers better. When they get changed you get 2 maybe 3 days of good stacking before it stacks like s**t again. They stack much better without them little belts, wish they'd let the engineers leave them belts off

In my office we have 2 CSS machines, they sequence 8 batches each. Average run times for wave one is approx 3.45 hours and wave 2 is approx 2 hours

If those MCs with FSMs stopped putting letters through them , there would be more work for the IMP/ILSM and in turn more work for the CSS. It's a bloody disgrace the amount that gets put through , no wonder the company can claim letter volumes are falling at a greater rate than they actually are.

I think they're trying to justify having the FSMs. Outside of Xmas pressure and the odd bulk posting I don't think there's really enough work now to justify RM having any FSMs.

That wave 1 total run time (assume it's per machine) sounds quite low. What's a typical batch size (number of items)? I think the target amount is somewhere around 5,800

Excluding exceptional days, I would say that the average is around 4000 now. If there are weeks where that is much higher, then wave 2 is usually lower, sometimes under 1000. There just isn’t the volume anymore.

Agree with this, the amount of DSA work that is run through an FSM, and is therefore only walk sorted (if you're lucky) is a joke.

The companies get a discounted rate as their letters meet the requirements to be sequence sorted on a CSS, but running them through an FSM will require manual sorting at the DO, and is therefore costing Royal Mail more money to sort. This must run into hundreds of thousands of letters nationally per week?

Yes you are right that these are the machines which sequence the mail.
In our office we have been told that due to falling letter mail volumes they are no longer viable. As a consequence the 3 which we have will be removed at some point this year. My guess is it will be sooner rather than later. Rumour has it that one of our smaller neighbouring delivery offices will then move in with us using the space vacated by the machines. This will leave another piece of silverware for Rico + co to sell off !.
MCs can also sequence mail on their IMPs and iLSMs though in many MCs some of them will be decommissioned and removed to make space for the new PSMs so there's a good chance that some DOs are going to start to get their mail later as there'll be less machines available to sequence the mail. Our local MPU got reverted back to a normal DO years ago

Just to update the situation regarding the removal of our css machines. They are being removed from our office in 3 weeks time. Unsurprisingly the staff don't know what's happening to them yet.
This space is then going to be used for the large parcels . Does anyone know whether Warrington mc has the capacity to sequence the mail ?.
Anyone who has been with the business long enough will know that manual sorting all letters is a relatively time consuming process.
This will surely have an impact on the indoor aspect of the job in my opinion.

2 css machines from hubs are due to be added to the 8 machines already at Warrington mc

We are also losing our 2 css machines in the next 7-8 weeks. VR has been mentioned as a possible option. I would appreciate if somebody could clarify if css operators are regarded as processing or delivery, as there seems to be some confusion between postman, managers and ucw reps!

I think if it's an MPU then you're tagged as delivery and if it's in a MC then you're tagged as processing.

tbqf with the way that letters are dropping off i can see RM axing all sequencing and reverting back to walk sort within the next 5 years
