Managers monitor the rate of the sorting here and what work there is available each hour. Only a matter of time before the same happens in deliveries. When many of us in MCs eventually loose our jobs as a result of more automation it's going to have a knock on affect in deliveries. If RM were to bring in machines that could sequence flats, letters and D2D together then that'll have delivery staff with increased delivery spans. If RM were to have 2D barcodes on every packet then I don't think it'd be too much of a push to being able to sort all packets to walks.TrueBlueTerrier wrote:Really you want to continue the us and them between MC and Deliveries.wacko74 wrote:I suppose they can console themselves with the thought of their 1970's working conditions, 3 men doing the work of one etc...TrueBlueTerrier wrote:To be honest, now I am an MC worker, it's probably some upset night workers who thought the thread was a tad insensitive.SpacePhoenix wrote:I find that hard to believe as well. That REX software that PF use to generate rounds if scaled up could mean an end to delivery staff having fixed walks with walks being dynamically generated every day

RM is already half way towards doing it. With parcel sorting machines, the machine can record the address that the item is going to. iLSMs and IMPs can record where an item is going to. If new machines come in capable of handling letters and flats together (they already exist, most sorting machine manufacturers have one). Combined with a more powerful version of REX run at a local level and that's the end of fixed roundsDorset Plodder wrote:SpacePhoenix wrote:

"If Ifs & Buts were pots and pans there'd be no work for Tinkers Hands".Meanwhile in the Real World we'll just get on with delivering the Mail shall we?

Imagine the chaos of different people delivering each day ,you would have "Dave leaves my parcels there but Margaret leaves then here" meanwhile Pete just puts a 739 through and Rob tries a neighbour.
Wouldn't be much incentive to try neighbours , most regulars try to keep the customer happy whilst the rest day ,float person has so much more to remember and is less likely to " go the extra mile "

What a truly bonkers idea. Why make such a simple job more complicated than what it should be. Imagine if a manager has to deal with a customer complaint - who on earth could it be??
On the face of it, shareholder value is the dumbest idea in the world.

I see we're getting off topic here, but to me, that's one distinct advantage that RM has over every other delivery company. The fact that we know the addresses AND the customer. What a backwards step it would be to have different posties doing different duties every day. No continuity, no customer connection. And will it really be more efficient than the regular postie does it? Really? If it does happen then we can pretty much all say bye bye to any tips.

Whoever was logged in on the PDA covering where the complainer is (btw the customer is the person sending the mail, not the recipient)postslippete wrote:SpacePhoenix wrote:

Good, then I won't get grief from walk holder AND addressee when I won't stand on my hands and s**t mars bars or whatever convoluted and highly questionable arrangement they have between them.
No favours= No tips= No bullshit

Would be interesting to know the details of the consultants that supposedly devised the 'new parcel strategy' for Rico Black.ssdd wrote:I see we're getting off topic here, but to me, that's one distinct advantage that RM has over every other delivery company. If it goes ahead and can actually work then by next Xmas we won't be delivering most parcels including all the Tracked items as well plus maybe the SDs as well. That will result in far less contact with 'our customers' which will have a knock on effect on the amount of tips we might get. In exchange we will get twenty percent more delivery points.
I don't actually see these changes being possible to achieve within duty time plus 'our customers' will be confused as to what is going on with parcels delivered in the dark part of the year. Maybe they should rename it the 'really crap strategy' ?

I’d find it really awkward taking tips from my neighborsSeymour Buts wrote:Isn't there a rule you're meant to declare a tip above a certain amount as a potential bribe?
I think attitudes have changed to be honest, most people now just think get on with your job rather than tipping anybody. Even how we work is different, we're mostly paired so which one do you tip? The one doing the oversized or the walker? The ones who get the most tips in our office are the rurals, and that's mostly because they've been doing that job for many years so everybody knows who they are. One guy has been doing the same route for 30 years in our office and he lives there so he knows them socially too.
