LATE MAIL: Truck speed limit blamed for Mull misery

Regulations governing the speed trucks can travel were blamed by the Government today for late mail deliveries on the Scottish island of Mull.

Liberal Democrat Alan Reid (Argyll and Bute) complained that Royal Mail had stopped sending the post on the first ferry of the day.

But to his evident bemusement, Postal Services Minister Pat McFadden said the real cause of the delay was regulations restricting trucks to 56 mph.

At question time, Mr Reid said: "Just last month Royal Mail stopped sending the mail to Mull on the first ferry of the day.

"This means that it is being delivered to customers on the island two hours later than has been for many years.

"The daily newspapers are also affected, meaning they don't arrive in the shops until about midday.

"Will the Government, as the owners of Royal Mail, please investigate this and demand that Royal Mail give to people in Mull the same service they enjoyed for many years."

Mr McFadden said the issue was "not so much to do with postal services as such, but European legislation on transport".

He added: "The reason this is happening is because of new legislation requiring all vehicles weighing more than 7.5 tonnes, including those operated by Royal Mail, to travel at no more than 56mph.

"That's why this is happening. It's not so much to do with Royal Mail. It's to do with the speed limit on the trucks which carry the mail."

It's not, all the trucks in our office have now been regulated.As far as I know most in Scotland have been as well.

It makes a big difference when your running late.
Now you can't make up any lost time.

These later starts are really hurting us sometimes as the last Run/Mis-sorts from and to the satellite offices keeps getting snarled up in the rush hour traffic. What's the betting the move our starting times again to cope with it.

Does Mr Reid not know that its not only Mull that gets their mail "2" hours later than normal but every town in BRITAIN!!!

To be honest this f**k up has nothing to do with RM but our friends in the European Union who make up these daft laws.
We can now look forward to convoys of trucks in the slow lane doing 56mph, which take about 5mins to overtake each other.
56mph = most fuel efficient speed!

10. Mr. Alan Reid (Argyll and Bute) (LD): What assessment he has made of the performance of Royal Mail against national standards for mail delivery, with particular reference to the service on the Isle of Mull; and if he will make a statement. [166791]

The Minister for Employment Relations and Postal Affairs (Mr. Pat McFadden): The responsibility for ensuring that Royal Mail meets its quality of service standards rests with Postcomm, the postal services regulator. I understand from Postcomm that on the Isle of Mull, which is part of the PA postcode district, Royal Mail is required to meet the standard of 91.5 per cent. of first class mail delivered the next day, and that that standard is being met across that postcode district.

Mr. Reid: But just last month, Royal Mail stopped sending the mail to Mull on the first ferry of the day. That means that it is being delivered to customers throughout the island two hours later that it has been for many years. The daily newspapers are also affected, meaning that they do not arrive in the shops until about midday.
