Not sure it's wealth dependent. Seems there are those who have always tipped and always will and those who never have and never will.

I never work for Tips but it's nice if you get some as recognition for the extra effort you make :thumbup I've been on the this Duty for nearly Four Years now so the customers get a chance to recognise you .... Although some of them still don't remember my name.

As previously mentioned it's normaly the Blind OAP that gives you a Fiver, while the Rich Bastard in the Big House gives you sweet FA :no no TBH I've always got time for the Old Biddies, sometimes we're the only person they get to chat with all day, and they remind me of my Nan. We do provide a Social Service and it's NEVER been recognised by Royal mail in their never-ending efforts to screw even more work out of us :speak to the hand .... It's nice to be recognised by the people that count ... The Customers! :thumbup

Here's wishing all you Hard Working Posties a Merry Christmas, enjoy the rest with your Families & Friends (and Bollocks to the Runners, and Arse Lickers, I hope your next shite's a Pineapple)! :cuppa

Aye, it's not about the financial gain, but recognition as you say Dorset. Sometimes you could be made feel like s**t on the bottom of someone's shoe as you hand them a bill and get a sarky response, or worse. But thank God there are still some decent, considerate folks out there.
RM had that article in the Courier where they were 'supposed' to be trialling that thing where Posties would check in on some of our older more vulnerable clients. Can't see that flying under Rico's agenda.
Big, heavy, sweaty and unwashed BOLLOCKS to the system that makes us work harder for less and ALL THE BEST! to the honest and decent guys and gals out there.

I don't understand the logic of the runners and those that come in early (as much as an hour early).

Can anyone explain to me these people's logic behind this?

My assumption is that Runners seem like they want to finish as early as physically possible so that they feel like they are getting their monies worth. They like the feeling of finishing at 1pm, knowing they are paid until 2pm. There is no real benefit with finishing early unless you are allowed to go home early which isn't always the case. Usually when these posties finish early they have to sit around in their vans at least until it gets to 1.30pm. They rush around stressing out at any little thing that slows them down.

My assumptions with those who come in early is they love working or they like to try to make the job easier for themselves, neither make any sense as who wants to spend their life working and you only have to work to time anyway.

Can anyone that's a runner or who comes in early explain the logic to these ways of working.....cos it's difficult to understand. thanks

By rights the DOM should be giving them an additional hours worth of work.

The runners give higher up scope to take hours out of a DO

Its Obvious you don't work in a Delivery Office SP (as your profile states). This kind of Shite has been going on for years, and most DOMs don't bother dealing with it. :no no From an RM point of view they love it if Posties are coming in early and working for FREE, that's if they're Not paying ANY Overtime (and TBH if you come in one hour early, and finish one hour early no harms done) :hmmmm It's when they're coming in one hour early , finishing on time ... and then the DOMs not paying them any OT, because, "Well you finished at your correct time" that's when it doesn't make sense. :arrrghhh

There's Various explanations given by Posties: I like to get out Early and avoid the Rush Hour ... I've got to get home early to walk the dog.. pick the kids up... Get to my second job etc .... All no doubt valid ... BUT Please don't work for nothing :pray You are Correct SP the DOM "should" be giving them extra work to take them up to their contracted finish time, but IMO they just be bothered with the hassle. I spoke to the DOM about someone who is a Habitual Early Finisher and asked WHY he didn't give him more work? He said, "He's just a Fast Worker and if I give him more work ... when he leaves it will be an Oversized Duty that won't be able to be done in time" FFS I said, "Then why don't you just give him enough work to take it up to his Finish Time ... AND then "when" :hmmmm he leaves take some work off again"? He looked at me as if I was stupid .... Perhaps I am? :cuppa

Except for the PDA actuals highlighting hours that could be saved from offices...

More likely to get a tip from an older person - as in over 40 - than from a younger person but even this isn't a hard & fast rule. Essentially it comes down to it they want to or don't want to give you a tip. The majority won't tip you so about 30% of households will, but often only if you catch them on the doorstep, and 70% generally won't give you a tip. I don't think being rich or poor is a factor either as most people have a few pounds or some chocolates to spare.

in Layman's terms a runner on a 5 day week making an hour a day therefore based on £10 an hour makes £50 a week. Times this by 46 weeks (holidays deducted) equals £2300. Makes you realise why the business wants to use PDA actuals.

Well happy with £20 this year including a tenner this morning. Got jack s**t off any F/T'ers for covering their rounds all year on their days off, so was more than happy to pocket the scraps on offer and answer "yes I am" to the question "are you are regular postman?" :left:

barry - understand what you're trying to say, but to my mind the runner doesn't actually make any money - he/she just gets the same amount
of pay whether he/she does the round to duty time/contracted hours or finishes an hour early. It's the business that is 'losing' money - paying someone
for doing nothing - like you say - that's why the business wants to use PDA actuals - we'll all suffer in the end - the duty will get more
work dumped on it....
