CWU ‘silent’ on TNT disc loss

Post by TrueBlueTerrier »

The Communications Workers Union has refused to get involved in the so-called ‘data-gate’, claiming that, as the union has members in all the postal operating companies, it cannot comment.

In the past, the CWU has been a fierce opponent of privatisation of the network but a spokeswoman declined to comment on the situation to precisionmarketing.co.uk

The company responsible for the loss of the two discs, TNT, won the contract from Royal Mail in April 2002 following a tender process, but has picked up a raft of business since the market was opened up to full competition at the beginning of 2006.

This shift of business has been widely criticised, as the Government is the sole shareholder of Royal Mail.

One industry insider says: “If Royal Mail had been responsible for this, they would have been hauled over the coals. What questions are being asked of TNT?â€

Re;C.W.U. SILENT ON T.N.T. disc loss

Post by the shark »

The C.W.U. should be using this so called "data gate" to apply pressure on our sole shareholder the goverment, after all they set up the regulators who have critisized and fined royal mail for past mistakes with a no mercy approach.
Is this another case of the C.W.U.backing of again. TIME FOR NEW BLOOD AT THE TOP!!!

re: This is about mailrooms

Post by F0zziebear »

Mailrooms have been tendered for, for years. RM for example runs the BBC mailrooms (at least did). It's important you get your union fighting over the right issues.

The CWU probably represent a number of those employees in those mailrooms.

Secondly, the CWU does not just represent RoyalMail employees and will not in the future

1. At present there is nothing concrete that this got lost in the TNT mailing system
2. Mailing rooms as stated before have been run by various companies for a long time
3. The CWU stands for Communication Workers Union, it doesn't stand for hairy arsed postmen who are only interesting in protecting their jobs, but like to make out that they are protecting a public service that less and less people use.

4.The Powerful Five Questions;
1. what power do you have ?
2. where did you get it?
3. in whose interest do you exercise it ?
4. to whom are you accoutable ?
5. how can we get rid of you?

Only democracy gives us that right, that is why NO-ONE with power likes democracy, and that is why every generation must struggle to run it and keep it, including you and me,here and now.

It doesn't exist anymore Fozzie you make some good points about the fact that the CWU has members from other companies BUT there is a postal section of the CWU that mainly stands for RM postal workers.I MIGHT be a hairy arsed postman that is interested in protecting me and my colleagues jobs terms and conditions AND protecting a public service that more and more downstream access companies(TNT)use as can be verified by every walking postman 7 or more full bags per day,"less and less people use" no postie will believe that.As for a rose-tinted infected tony benn 1960s post office might not exist anymore BUT is that a good or a bad thing.

"At present there is nothing concrete that this got lost in the TNT mailing system" hmm!. Does alistair darling not know this for he made a statement to the house on this matter to the effect that indeed TNT did receive the package!. Are you suggesting otherwise ie was captain darling misleading the house?.

According to PostCon's webshite, they themselves cannot fine or censure any mail operator other than Royal Mail, instead it must refer it to the OFT!

Talk about level playing field??? (again)

Actually FOzzie, TNT have no record of receiving the discs because they were sent by their normal mail, and as such cannot be tracked. They have searched all possible locations, and not found them which makes you think TNT have them... somewhere, perhaps even in our network, or even God Forbid, misdelivered to someone else!

Re : technicality

Post by F0zziebear »

In all likelihood it was put into their internal postal system. What I was saying is that because it was not sent using trackable systems its not possible to say with 100% confidence that it's in there.

Did Darling mislead the House, well on a technical level possibly, but no-one is going to bring him to book when in all probability it did enter their system.

The point is that regardless of who ran the system if it had been sent without tracing then the same problem could have occured.

An item lost in RM's system if not sent using a trackable system is very difficult to find.

2. I agree most members of the CWU are from RM. However, if TNT are here to stay then it makes sense to make them meber sof the CWU to ensure that their terms and conditions are not significantly worse than yours. This will help ensure a level playing field and stop TNT undercutting RM as much because their wage bill would be higher. Once TNT start using lifestyle couriers and getting away with it then when then open their own delivery depots it will be harder to negotiate their terms and conditions to a level similar in RM.

3. As for protecting public services, well the majority of mail goes B2C. This means businesses to consumers. This in my mind is commercial enterprise and not necessarily a public service. The public service bit which in my opinion is classed as social C2C mail and small/medium businesses needs protecting and as such I agree on this point. A unique solution needs to be found and talks are ongoing about this.
