This is an indictment of the union movement in the UK. Is there any union left with the balls to make a stand AT ALL COSTS or not? If not then forget the union you may as well take out an insurance policy against victimisation. The CWU are bleating on about Unionists in Colombia being victimised by the ruling Junta - but they do nothing about its own members being victimised by this Government and in fact collude with it.

KEY points really ,the battle for hearts and minds. You create the agenda and publicise safe issues to make you appear cutting edge and radical but at the end of the day if it goes tits up ,who remembers cos it don,t affect their day to day life,but the impression of well intentioned solidarity lingers. Such ethereal support requires only words ,no commitment ,we've witnessed that right here

so what form should this "initiative" take?
i think the rank-and-file membership of the cwu - as the other unions, need to organise themselves independently
so perhaps a conference of r-and-f members should be called
to discuss the way forward.

if there is a NO vote then it looks like the best option on offer would be resumption of the strikes
(mis-)led by the same bureaucrats;

if the deal is accepted, it's likely there will continue to be a need for local struggle
because of the bloody-mindedness of local management on behalf of Management
- and as usual, local disputes will eally be about national issues

which is also even if there IS a NO vote:-

in birmingham tomorrow is the next 'planning' meeting of our trades council sub-committee to organise
a conference of public sector unions about the attacks of the government/management
and i am after that whatever comes out of this conference has to be in a position to support unofficial action, and
of course we are after assisting/encouraging rank-and-file organisation in each and all unions

Dont think that before xmas is viable. Spoke to area rep yesterday and asked him, he said that they have to wait and see first if it is a NO VOTE once thats through then they have to arrange to meet RM and then it will take time to sit around a table drinking coffee and eating biscuits before they can see if the deal can be improved without further IA.

Maybe not a bad thing, let Xmas go and hit them hard in January when all the Banks are screaming at them to make sure payments get through to them.. should give us some leverage.
