Local vacancies

Post by celerycelery »

Our office have about 8 deliveries that need advertising due to retirement and people leaving. We have now been told that despite these jobs all being full time positions for the previous people on them, 4 of them are now being downgraded to part time. This must be one of the ways RM are gonna create a part time workforce. It also means we will be 4 people down on sorting first thing in the morning as part timers dont do sorting at our place :d'oh!

Similar here, full time vacancies are not being properly filled. If the only applicant for a full time vacancy is a 30-hour part timer they are given the job but kept on 30-hour pay plus claiming 2 hours a day overtime. Surely this is wrong as they are properly fulfilling a full time role but are only getting part time holiday/sick pay and pension contributions. Is this happening elsewhere, and if so has it been challenged, and if so have management backed down ?

All our part-timers who have been given a full time duty are being made full time within 4-6 weeks we were told today. Some have been filling in a docket for rest of the hours for months. Not fair when they are on holiday as they were only getting there part time hours pay. Dont reckon we will ever see any full time 40 hours new starters again

Thats what is happening in our office as well, bloody disgraceful, it even took months of arguing to get them to give the guys the OT never mind making them up to the full 40 hrs :cfo :lfo

And less people willing to do overtime as the day has already been extended by over an hour.

Let the good times roll.

What I dont get in all this is this:

Full time hours 6.15am - 2.15pm

Part time hours at our office 7am-1pm.

How does this work, RM think that the walks can be done by 1.00pm?

But move our hours to a 2.15pm finish.

Its what I have been saying all along, the only reason they wany us starting later is to inconvenience us all. Its has NOTHING to do with EU laws and all that crap. Its pure jealousy.. nothing more.

Is the reason for the later starts the sequencing machines operate best when the mail is all being put through at once rather than dribs and drabs??

18 full time and 2 part time vacancies at our d.o!!! they have recently started 2 people on 24 contracts. the walks are supposed to be ready for them when they come in at 0930!!! things are slipping already, with the walks not being ready for the people when they come in!! we are that stretched on ips that a manager has to throw up the two walks. there's just no one spare to throw up the walks!! this obviously is not working so r.m in their wisdom are recruiting even more on 24 hour contracts!!! the job ad is in our local paper this week. it mentions SORTING your own mail and the odd 5am start!!!! we don't even start at 5am and we are FULL TIME !!! :cfo :lfo :cfo :lfo :arrrghhh :arrrghhh :arrrghhh :arrrghhh :arrrghhh :arrrghhh :arrrghhh

Part timers Mis-Led

Post by flimes »

During my job interview last year I asked whether there would be any chance of full time vacancy I was told that the part time contracts were unlikely to last and that us part timers would be offered full time contracts. I now know that this is untrue.

Also during my induction training I was told that when we arrived in the mornings our walks when would be thrown in ready for us to bag up and deliver.

I got a shock when i actually started work. First day I went out with a full timer for half a walk. Second day I went in and was told to help 2 other part timers who started with me to throw in a walk and then take it out. Not knowing the walk, we messed the bag order up and kept going back on ourselves trying to deliver the mail.

For the next six months I used to have to come at 8.30, find out what walk I was on, throw in my walk and then deliver it - sometimes not finishing until 4.30. The same happening to the other 4 part timers that started with me (by the sixth month I was the only one us left). Things only got better when I threatened to to quit (after coming in to be told to do a walk that had no one on it for 3 days and told I HAD to to it on my own).

Now I've been authorised to come in a 6.30 and throw my walk in. So now Me and 4 other part timers are doing at least 10 hours overtime each week and yet we still have another 4 or 5 part timers having their walks thrown in for them (even then the managers are struggling to get the walks thrown in).

Only reason I do the overtime is because I need the money to pay my mortgage otherwise more then likely just work my hours. I would have turned the job down straight away. if knew there was no chance of full times job.

I agree, I'm part time. I start at 6.30, finish 12.45 Mon to Fri (Sat 5.40-10.40) (due to child care commitments) The full timers start 6.30 Mon to Fri and 4.45 Sat. Some of them still finish before me. While I can complete my delivery Mon to Fri, there is no chance on a (Lighter) Sat as I've got 1 hour less on my duty. It takes the same amount of time to throw my walk off and bag up as during the week and the same amount of time to deliver. Basically, for the 30 hours I'm employed I work 30 hours including 30 mins meal breaks, but half the full timers are working 30 hours and being paid 40. The other half however are doing the job properly, I know where flexibility is going to hurt! The later starts are causing nothing but grief, I'm the only part timer that starts earlier, the rest start at 7.15 and 1 of them has his walk thrown off for him before he comes in, by a full timer. With all the duties on OT that have to be thrown off, otherwise no-one will touch them, we must be down at least 10 on the IPS, but because we have a strong rep, as soon as the IPS time is up, what's left is, well left. We never had this problem before the later starts but they've squeezed out the last bit of goodwill from us.
