the four absences a year could be of any length, so not many people go sick just for one day

that means absolutely nothing to management. I and many of my colleagues have refused to sign a stage over the years, but you are still on it.

yes they could be of any length, but if you adopt that attitude you would be sacked in less than a year. 1 absence of 14 days puts you on a stage one. a further absence of 10 days gets you a stage 2. another absence of 10 days gets you to stage 3 and an RTU. You WOULD be out the door in 6 months! probably less.

Most important is the notes of the meeting as these go too the RTU because the whole history of the RTU ie each stage is gone through stage by stage and it's circumstances anyone of these can mitigate or rule out the stage warning/dismissal.
