1984 in 2007 Scary

Post by TrueBlueTerrier »

Just reading George Orwells Book again and 2 frightening slogans made sense. I have read it a few times before but the following 2 slogans just seem so apt at the moment:

FREEDOM IS SLAVERY

IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH

I wonder what AL and AC have been reading lately.

To be honest I've not looked at that book since I was forced to read it at school. I think I'll need to get myself a copy as it could just be what I'm missing. I do remember it had quite an impression on me. I love re-reading a good book just sitting at home, comfy chair, it's like meeting an old friend in the pub, well maybe not quite the same, too many kids thinking their Rambo and you can't even have a smoke.
And it's worse in the pub!

the film was good , , had a top cast & won awards , George Orwell's widow insisted there was to be no fancy futuristic special effects , if you watch the film ,you'll know about it , later hired it on video , not a peep out of anyone watching it .The Eurthymics had a few hits with songs off the soundtrack .

Novels can be more "subtle " and have "more meat to them ", it's all entertainment , whatever floats people's boats , it depends how much respect the film people have for someone's orginal printed work . Hollywood don't always have it .

there's a good article on http://en.wikapedia.org/ and http://www.imdb.com re 1984 film

There is a terrific amount of regimentation & a deliberate culture of fear at Walmart /Asda , they've a Walmart Time Theft Policy , they sacked someone for that and he took them to court and won £17K , the ET panel wasn't impressed by the CCTV tape "suddenly disappearing " of him taking necessary prescribed medication . That style started with the two brother s who ran IBM in the 60's , many jumped ship i.e. Compaq etc , very much a 80's macho style .

Walmart in the US have quite a propaganda machine , but there's been a liberal/left backlash against it .

A few people on here have knocked the nail on the head about responsibility /authority and RM being in continuous Crisis Mode in recent threads .

I liked the film - although it was better 2nd time round after reading the book. A lot easier to understand.

2001 A Space Odyssey was also a good book and film although I did that in the right order book and film.
