Sky sources say details relating to seven and a half million child benefit claimants have gone missing from tax offices.
The chairman of HM Revenue and Customs Paul Gray has resigned.

Ex HM Customs and Revenue chairman Paul GraySky sources say that the claimants' details were contained on two CDs which were lost.

The Metropolitan Police have confirmed officers are "making inquiries" into the loss of the discs.

It is understood the missing discs may contain personal data, including the names, National Insurance and bank details of millions of child benefit recipients.

In a letter to HMRC staff, Mr Gray said: "I am announcing today that I will be standing down as HMRC Chairman as a result of a substantial operational failure in the Department.

"This is not the way I would have planned to organise my departure from HMRC."

Conservative member of the House of Commons Treasury Committee Michael Fallon told Sky News no one knew why Mr Gray had resigned.

"I assume it was a matter of honour that he decided to stand down immediately. It is a good example and should be followed more widely."

If it was the case that peoples' details had been lost, he said, Chancellor Alistair Darling would be in a precarious position.

"It will underline the growing feeling that we have a new chancellor who is not up to the job," he said.

Sky News' Political Editor Adam Boulton said the implications for the Treasury were very serious.

"I would expect this afternoon that from some quarters we will hear suggestions that Alistair Darling should resign, and his position has already been damaged by the Northern Rock crisis."

"There is the issue of confidence in the Government, a government that is trying to set up a computerised ID card scheme for every citizen," he added.

"This kind of information failure very much damages the credibility of those efforts."

Lib Dem leadership contender Chris Huhne said he was "flabbergasted" at the situation.

"It is a breach of trust and it is quite right that one head has a rolled, but if ministers knew about this, if they knew about the security problems, I'm afraid ministerial heads will have to roll as well."

Darling admits 25m records lost

Two computer discs holding the personal details of all families in the UK with a child under 16 have gone missing.
The Child Benefit data on them include name, address, date of birth, National Insurance number and, where relevant, bank details of 25m people.

Chancellor Alistair Darling said there was no evidence the data had fallen into criminal hands - but urged people to monitor their bank accounts.

The Conservatives described the incident as a "catastrophic" failure.

In an emergency statement to MPs Mr Darling apologised for what he described as an "extremely serious failure on the part of HMRC to protect sensitive personal data entrusted to it in breach of its own guidelines".

MPs gasped as Mr Darling told them: "The missing information contains details of all Child Benefit recipients: records for 25 million individuals and 7.25 million families. "

The chancellor blamed mistakes by junior officials at HMRC, who he said ignored security procedures.

"Two password protected discs containing a full copy of HMRC's entire data in relation to the payment of child benefit was sent to the NAO, by HMRC's internal post system operated by the courier TNT.

The package was not recorded or registered. It appears the data has failed to reach the addressee in the NAO."

"The police tell me that they have no reason to believe that this data has found its way into the wrong hands. The police are not aware of any evidence that it has been used for fraudulent purposes or criminal activity."

I've just watched the entire story on Sky news. Apart from the mention by Alistair Darling in his address to the Commons of TNT, every other reference to the incident referred to the 'post' or 'postbox' 'registered or unregistered'. This is going to lead to confusion over who actually lost the item, unless they actually watch the ENTIRE report. We're going to get so many k***s blaming US, instead of TNT. This I fear, is the first of many. So many people want us to fail that they will jump on any story regardless of the facts. I think that the lack or reference to the actual company that lost them was deliberate. Murdoch = Wan***

Just watched the BBC 6 oclock news and no mention of TNT just that the discs were posted.

If TNT lost them name them.
