Probably most posties would consider leaving the job if duty times were moved to a 1700 duty end time on weekdays let alone for Saturday's. You have to have some quality of life and a decent work/life balance. I think in years past and maybe even now people were attracted to this job because you could finish earlier in the day or afternoon to enable time for other activities or even to fit in another part time job or for family commitments etc. This element of the duty time has been degraded over time by both the CWU with their SWW and by RM with their cost cutting regime. If it goes much further this will be a traditional 9 to 5 job but with all the hassle and aggro from RM on top as well. In the end RM will find it much more difficult to find people willing to work for them if they don't change direction.

There are two possible major changes on the USO front. The one more likely to be pushed is an every other day service for letters and flats with an every day service for packets & parcels. I imagine they might look for changes to delivery for the Scottish islands & other more difficult locations. They should look to level playing field changes such as a rethink of the DSA and enforcement of minimum wage requirements for the competition but those issues haven't been mentioned.
Regarding the five day operation plan I don't think they will go for that. If they do then the wise and obvious choice would be to drop the Tuesday. If they wanted to break the strike vote or make the false impression that they care about the workforce then Saturday would be another option. It would lead to thousands more job losses though so the union would fight it tooth and nail.

Don't get too excited about generous redundancy payments as they will be the next thing in Royal Mails firing line. There's no way they can afford to pay thousands off under the current system.

09:00-17:00 for deliveries I can see happening at some point so that RM could cut down or even eliminate night rate in MCs. If letters and flats went to being every other day then that would probably be all MPUs reverting back to being normal DOs and their CSS machines removed

It’s the union that are spreading this rumour that Tuesday would be the day dropped rather than the Saturday as they know if Royal Mail wanted to drop the Saturday it would get the backing of the work force.How many businesses rely on mon to fri Mail , it would be commercial suicide to drop a day other than Saturday.

Anyone thinking the business wouldn’t operate Saturday’s think again. Look at our competitors - working 7 days a week. People want their parcels asap so not delivering weekends would mean our customers switching to the competitors who can do it cheaper and faster.

Your missing the point like quite a few on here do.We are not talking about not delivering parcels on Saturday or even sundays , we are talking about dropping the uso for Saturday which only covers letters.

Yes he is right , tracked , specials etc. Which would only require a skeleton service but it’s all rumours at the moment .

You are not guaranteed they will cut Saturday deliveries. They could turn round & give everyone tuesdays off across the board as this is usually the lightest day for Mail.

How does that make sense when every firm and business up and down the country work mon to fri and rely on service on these days . Would be commercial suicide.

This is a rumour put about by certain members of the union because the idea of a Mon - Fri is unfortunately quite appealing to a lot of members.

Closing the doors on a Tuesday makes no business sense at all and is a non-starter.

I can't see a Tuesday as businesses reply on mail during their Monday-Friday week.
