Verbatim from the attendance policy:

It is at the manager's discretion whether or not a formal notification should be issued. If the manager decides to issue a formal notification they should ensure that the process set out in the Attendance Policy has been followed

What's the % of Stage 1 Reviews that end up with a Stage 1 Warning?

Downeagle wrote:15 years a postie and have recently received a stage 1 after going over on my ankle and damaging ligaments whilst on duty but no break after an X-ray. My manager in his interview appreciated that I still felt pain and came back to work earlier than anticipated. At the time of the interview he was more interested in establishing that my trip was due to my suspect ankle (broken 13=year’s ago) as opposed to uneven ground which he said gets categorised differently.
Needless the say the letter states I surpassed 14 days (15) within a 12 month period and there is no right of appeal though the wording “I have decided that it is appropriate to issue the Attendance Review 1 makes me think he has a choice. If he had a choice and I did it on duty and he was able to see from my yellow dot that I couldn’t move for 10 minutes why would he give it?
No other sick leave.
From the attendance agreement Q&A section:

Absences due to accidents at work will normally be discounted from the formal attendance process. There are a few exceptions to this - Any manager considering counting an absence arising from an accident at work must contact the HR Services Advice Centre and inform the employee.

Also:

Grievances against the issuing of Attendance Review 1 or Attendance Review 2 may only be raised if the grievance relates to a procedural flaw, for example, absences arising from disability, maternity, accident on duty or part day absences being counted towards the formal process without the employee being first notified in writing.

I'm guessing that would completely depend on your DOM.

In the office I am in probably 99.89% stage 2 99.1% so you can see it is a top down meritocracy they do have a bonus criteria on sick absence and AOD you know in fact 25 criteria on all sorts of things like tracked items and first time delivery and even HYS and lots of other things I could not even begin to list here. So just depends how bonus focused your office manager is and their boss and boss above them till you get to rico back!

When you went back to work did you have a welcome back meeting? where the DOM asked you a lot of questions about your sickness
and is there anything RM can do for you?

If you didn't then he can't issue a stage 1 as he did not follow proper procedure, i have got 2 guys off with this
if you did then i am sorry it is most likely you will get a stage one unless you have strong mitigating circumstances
it is only for 6 months, so not too bad.

they are ''supposedly'' issued/not issued on merit. GARBAGE. they are supposed to follow procedures but they will STILL issue a stage unless they literally can't. and they get away with it because there is no appeal. f****** SCANDALOUS.

Part of the problem is, as the title of the thread suggests, people regard it as a warning.
If you just think of it as a gentle reminder then it becomes less emotive.
The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

problem is though they ''remind'' people for being off with broken legs, arms, accidents on duty, dog attacks, heart problems, mental health issues, even people who were off due to bereavement. the list is endless. one ex gaffer who was a mate with a few of us and used to drink with us a few years back, told us that DSM had told him he wanted every pending stage issued regardless!!. that's the type of vile poison minded people we have at the top unfortunately.

No what they want to do is use the attendance procedure as an extension of the conduct code.
They want to remove hours from the office by the cheapest means possible and without recourse to compulsory redundancies.
But you can't fight that before stage 3 so there is no point getting worked up and stressed about it.
You make sure you have union representation at every stage and you make sure all your concerns/objections are documented and then you give whoever represents you at stage 3 the ammunition to defend you.
Or stress yourself out, make yourself ill and move up a stage.

I've known all managers to follow the procedures quite rigorously with the welcome back meeting and then issuing the stage warning is just a formality of tie-ing up all the loose ends on their part. Years ago you might have got a decent gaffer who would not issue stage warnings willy nilly, but nowadays its every manager for themselves and they do what they are told or face being shipped out to a different delivery office by the DOM.
On the face of it, shareholder value is the dumbest idea in the world.

We had a guy who hadn’t taken a single day off sick in 18 years then had to go for an operation on his back, all fully documented come back early after 6 of his recommended 8 weeks recuperation period - as he didn’t want to ‘leave work in the lurch anymore than he had to’ - came back got slapped with a stage one.

You can’t fight that sort of stupid. I’m not sure it even entered the managements heads that surely if even he gets put on a stage 1 it makes a mockery of the entire system. Whether connected or not, I couldn’t possibly guess, a lot more people took 3 extra long weekends a year carefully not amounting to more than 13 days after they did that to him.

Well I got a warning today. It states on the documents the stand in DoM gave me that I have been given it because it is RM policy to issue warnings if you go over the 14 day period. And there's me thinking they were supposed to take everything into account and come to a decision based on rational thought and intelligence. Next time, if there is a next time I'll just keep playing the game and keep going back the doctors for more time off. May as well. I haven't signed the forms as I was advised not to by our rep.

not signing the forms means absolute 'diddley' to them. there's loads in my office (myself included) that have refused to sign issued stage warning forms. all they put on the bottom of the form is ''refused to sign'' then file it. it still stands.

its no wonder people 'play' the system as our DOM puts it. if you know you are over their set time limits for the attendance procedure and you know for a fact the DOM/LINO will issue it, then is it any wonder people stay off for longer, knowing they will go to a stage whether he/she comes back mon or fri? its also the reason people take the odd weekends off. 'pretendy' sick is rife in RM.
