The following article is available in pdf format.
The Socialist Equality Party calls on postal workers to reject the deal cooked up between Royal Mail management and the Communication Workers Union (CWU) and mobilize to defend their jobs, wages and conditions.
The deal is a kick in the teeth to the 130,000 postal workers who have taken determined action and lost days in pay to safeguard their rights.
It is not simply that the agreement involves an unequal balance of trade-offs and compromises. The CWU has given Royal Mail everything, in a package it knows will have dire implications for thousands of jobs, working conditions and pension rights and give a green light for the further liberalization of the industry.
The ballot procedure is an essential element in this. Having called off a series of rolling strikes in August, the CWU has done the same again and is now using a long, drawn-out “consultationâ€

Lies, damned lies and the Socialist Equality Party
Why is it that the so called left wing papers/parties have failed to understand or tell the truth about this dispute let alone give a clear analysis of what is possible in Britian today. And above all if you are going to lecture the working class tell the f'in truth. The CWU has not given management everything and the members know this. We have not mentioned much of the pensions problems hinge around the holiday - bullsh"t, frankly I got fed of of hearing about this. And as for hanging vitimised reps and members out to dry, give me a break.
Oh we've signed up to total flexibility and will be at the beck and call of management - Crap, another wopper. We'll never let this happen deal or no deal.
There is no long drawn out consultation on pay, this organisation have clearly got this mixed up with the legal requirement of RM to consult on Pensions. These dopes can't even get this right.
They claim he CWU is not a workers organisation. I do fear for such dim witted analysis from well educated people. If you think this of CWU then you clearly believe all unions are arms of the state, calaborators, trators, worse than scum that should be put up against the wall and shot.
One thing we may be able to agree on is that the capitalist system is the root of all evil. But if they think they will lead the revolution these sad twats they are sadly mistaken.

Perhaps you should read posts more carefully before you start ranting, or if you did then maybe you could paraphrase more accurately.kill Joy wrote:Why is it that the so called left wing papers/parties have failed to understand or tell the truth about this dispute let alone give a clear analysis of what is possible in Britian today. Just out of curiosity ,what is your role within RM , how will the agreement affect your working life?

That wouldn't be a bad article if you could just leave the sectionalism alone. There are other forums if you want to snipe at other left-wing parties, and there are a variety of left, anarchist and syndicalist organisations with members on here and we've all managed to maintain a reasonable level of solidarity over the last few months. Don't spoil it lad!
The Industrial Workers of the World. The union whose members never scab!

Oh I did read the post and in my opinion this is no place for ultra left intellectual lectures from these parasites. I dont think the SWP are the greatest party but give me them over this lot anyday. If they want to lead the revolution at least tell workers the truth, only then will people listen.BELIAL wrote:Perhaps you should read posts more carefully before you start ranting, or if you did then maybe you could paraphrase more accurately.kill Joy wrote:Why is it that the so called left wing papers/parties have failed to understand or tell the truth about this dispute let alone give a clear analysis of what is possible in Britian today. As far as my role Im like most on here a rep on the ground. It will effect me in a number of ways, pensions - Ive got 19 years in. On this if the members are up for it we may well have to fight again, but it wont be easy. Flexibility and attendances I think we can handle this, especially those with caring responsibilities. As an x wapping printer the main thing for me was ensuring the union is still functioning. I believe this was and still is RM greatest aim and they lost.

Re: Lies, damned lies and the Socialist Equality Party
What's in a name? The CWU will have a presence in the workplace, local negotiations - in a hostile environment? TBH its like having a 4 slice toaster that only toasts one side. On the one hand you talk of the CWU as a viable concern and on the other a need to rebuild - in order to rebuild you need a membership and with only two thirds of employees currently enrolled and this deal debacle doesn't encourage new members to join. There are more and more part time employees which equals less income for the union. Less income means we need to control expenditure and that means getting rid of dead weight and that means getting rid of those not fit for purpose.kill Joy wrote:Oh I did read the post and in my opinion this is no place for ultra left intellectual lectures from these parasites. So you read it carefully then chose to deliberately misrepresent the chaps article to denigrate his argument, thats a bit low.kill Joy wrote:Oh I did read the post and in my opinion this is no place for ultra left intellectual lectures from these parasites. Personaly Ithink the sectarian tone of his post was misguided in this place at this time but he does pose relevant questions. You might not like his views but perhaps we should reserve terms like parasite for the real bloodsuckers.
Can,t quite get my head around this "at least we preserved the union thing", to what end?
Let me know if I've got this wrong but the argument seems to be, despite massive membership support the union was in no position to resist these attacks, consequently we are forced to accept a real term pay cut, imposition of a pie in the sky productivity deal an implicit acceptance of RM's race to the bottom business model and surrendering the right to national bargaining on some of the biggest issues we have ever faced.- all to preserve a union that dare not act for fear of attack.
Well lets for arguments sake say this strategy succeeds{already looks fractured to me} at what point in the future and under what conditions will the time be right for our leadership to lead us in defence of our conditions. When is enough enough, what scale of RM assault will be required to prompt our union to fulfil it's stated role. If I buy a lawnmower, I want to cut the grass with it, I don't keep it in the shed in case the blades get blunt, but if they do I'd replace them.
Are you DO, MC Network? how has flexibility affected your shift patterns?
