That's Wigan and Leigh. Preston aren't anything really. They haven't been anything since the days of Tom Finney. He was the only famous person to come from Preston. He's so famous, they have a statue of him. It's enscribed 'Tom Finney. The last man from Preston who didn't imagine he was a Manchester United Supporter'. To give Tom his due, he did get to Old Trafford a couple of times.

I think the Lancashire Hotpots based the "act " on "Half A Schlling " , the "racist " folk band in the first episode of Phoenix Nights who did the " Send the b**gers back " song about the wrong coloured Holy Communion Shoes .

Peter Kay would be doing a skit on all those professonial showbiz regional stereotypes you get everywhere, & the cheesy "Folk " groups from the 70's like The Fivepenny Piece , and having a dig at political correctness . He'd have plenty of material if he saw some of the idiots RM have in charge .

There is a few more other famous people other than Sir Tom Finney from Sunny Preston, like the creator of Wallace & Gromit , John Inman , Roy Barrowclough and John Thomson but he's really from Lostock Hall , south of the ribble where the residents tend to point at aeroplanes and all look the same .That happens anywhere where places get insular & parchioal .

Liverpool's not imune to inbreeding either ,most of the digs have been aimed at former residents of Scotland Rd, the roots of that tend to be in Sectarianisim as you've imported all the problems from 400+ years .It happens !

It comes from a mining strike which involved Leigh & Wigan and the private mining companies , the Wiganers had to go back to work & eat humble pie, bit like the CWU with Lord Billy & I'll get you £400 pw Ward .

There's similar bad feeling between Southampton & Portsmouth on the south coast ,the term of abuse Scummer, is something to do with a Southampton Union Docks committee 's initials and the Portsmouth Dockers feeling let down by Southampton in a strike .

Some of the rivalary between Liverpool & Manchester Utd has it's roots in docks . South East /Cockney journalists have been shocked at the bad feeling & hatred at games .

When Everton played Man U in the 85 FA Cup , they reckoned there was going to be a riot if Everton had won.
The Cockney equivalent is West Ham & Millwall , again the roots are in docks .
