Yes, our second wave comes in at 7am. If everyone got in half or an hour early and if they resourced for some indoor lapsing rather than outdoor, everyone would be heading out well before 8am.SpacePhoenix wrote:Do the runs from your local MC come in early enough for that to be viable?sirchewey wrote:or come in earlier depending on a local agreement would be also beneficial to some.
It's purely an issue with the management approach to resourcing. On days that weather is an issue it wouldn't take much to make sure door to door items are prepped the day before for the next day etc to make extra time. If lapsing is necessary then lapse parcels in and around the delivery office for the HCT rounds and utilise whoever is on parcels to take the lapsed duty. Theres just one way out of several to help people out.

There are thousands of people that will have no issue with weather changes. However there are thousands of employees working in delivery that have done this job for many years and are now getting older and unable to cope with extremes of weather that they were able to do when much younger. The company has a duty to these people as much as they have a duty to you. It is a selfish attitude to think that just because you can cope with the extremes everyone should be able to. I can remember a few years ago a colleague in our delivery office had been away on holiday abroad and was not feeling too good when he returned to work, I believe from jetlag etc. The day he returned was extremely hot and he advised his manager that he did not feel well enough to go out on delivery and complete the full walk. His requests were ignored and he was sent out. Later that day he collapsed on delivery and died a few hours later. Had his managers listened to him he may still be alive today but I also accept that he may have died any way that day. The point is we are all different and all have different coping capabilities and it is ridiculous for people to come on here and say that just because they have had no issues at present that those who do should not be in this job. Your capabilities will certainly change as you get older and you might well change your attitude when this happens.Gold Fox wrote:I delivered mail when it was minus 15C and now 30C. I have done on bike and in van. No issue . Its outside job that what you get ... and if you can not do it why did you join delivery side of it ? Have a inside job in Mail Centre.

In parts of the south east the temperature was 37 not 30 and that is plain dangerous no matter what you think your heat tolerance is. Read up on the effects on the body of working in extreme heat., heart attacks, strokes, heat exhaustion, heat stroke and death. Proper risk assement should have been taken and advice taken from NHS whose web site stated people should avoid go outside from 11 till 3. What d/o managers should have advised was deliver packets only after walks were prepped and del the rest next day. This would have reduced the amount of exposure in the heat to what we had experienced.. if this was a blizzard would they have sent us out? This was an extreme weather event that was just as dangerous and I think RM fell short in their responsibility.

Exactly,
I am retired now. I was playing golf on Thursday as we had a match against another club. This was a Seniors Match and after 12 holes one of our opponents was taken ill and had to be taken off the course with a buggy. We decided to scrap our match at that time. When we arrived back at the clubhouse there were several people including a young person who had their heads over buckets being sick, and with their heads covered in cold towels. Royal Mail are certainly culpable of neglect if they are disregarding the NHS advice.

I don't quite understand this.Lincox wrote: The day he returned was extremely hot and he advised his manager that he did not feel well enough to go out on delivery and complete the full walk. His requests were ignored and he was sent out.
If you say - I'm not well I am going home, how does your manager make you go out on delivery?
The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

Team work guys!!!!
Some people cope better with heat than others. Look after your partner if you cope better than them help them out! If you get done early & you drive past a college offer them a hand.
Be sensible if you or your partner isn't designed for hot temperatures don't take your flex. Make it a joint decision you've gotta look after each other.
There's always idiots like me that take overtime on the hottest day of the year. Just hope someone will be as understanding to me on a really windy day. I hate wind!!!
And really do you need a manager to tell you when it's too hot? Just do your best cut off if it's too much, take regular breaks & charge them overtime if you go over!
